Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Scott sent to keep the peace?

Answer: Bosnia

Aviano was the air base Scott was stationed at in the beginning of the book. Scott met 'Wilbur' in South Korea and Kosovo is a province in Serbia.
2. Which of these was not in Scott's rucksack?

Answer: Extra clothing

The contents of his rucksack were: eight flexipaks of water, an empty water pouch, a wool ski hood, a sponge, a pair of wool socks, a pair of wool mittens, an orange hat, a green and silver tarp, a square of camo netting, a silver-foil blanket, sun goggles, sunblock lotion, a fire starter, a five-inch knife, and a booklet titled "Aircraft Survival"! He had some other equipment which he left with his parachute.
3. What did Scott name the cows that would occasionally graze near his hiding place?

Answer: Alfred and Leroy

Their shepherd, Scott called Tinker Bell, because of the bell he was always ringing. Although irritating, Scott found the bell to be a relief because he knew when it was being rung the shepherd wasn't telling the authorities where he was located.
4. How many days went by before Scott was rescued?

Answer: Six

Those six days seemed to last forever for Scott. I mean, try surviving on ants, leaves, and grass for six whole days!
5. On Scott's last day, Basher One-One (Tom Hanford) told Scott the code word "Manana". What did that mean?

Answer: Tomorrow

That meant that they would come for him tomorrow. Scott really didn't want to wait one more day to be rescued. Luckily for him, the TRAP commander wasn't afraid to do a daylight mission and decided to rescue him that very day.
6. What was the 555th Fighter Squadron's insignia of?

Answer: A bald eagle

Scott had a Velcro patch with that insignia on it. He also had another patch with a winged dragon on it, which stood for the Thirty-First Fighter Wing. One of the rules of the Air Force was to always remove your insignia from your clothes. This is so that the enemy won't know from which Squadron you're from.
7. Who was the pilot flying in tandem with Scott when he was shot down?

Answer: Bob Wright

Bob Wright's nickname was Wilbur. Scott met him at the Kunsan Air Base in South Korea. Bob was thirty-three and one of the most experienced and capable leaders Scott knew.
8. Which of these foods did Scott not eat while waiting to be rescued?

Answer: Bark

Once rescued, he found that he had lost twenty-five pounds because of the lack of food. He also found out that he was mildly dehydrated, had hypothermia, trench foot, and an elevated blood pressure and pulse rate. His most serious problem was the case of trench foot.
9. What were Scott's siblings named?

Answer: Paul and Stacy

Scott was the eldest, then Stacy, then Paul. Stacy was born on the same day as Scott, but in a different year. She was probably the most worried of his family when they heard the news. She never liked him flying F-16's and always worried when he went on missions.
10. Who was the US President during the book?

Answer: Bill Clinton

Once rescued, Scott and his whole family were invited for lunch at the White House. Scott got to talk with both Bill and Hillary Clinton for over an hour. The lunch consisted of mixed greens, crabmeat salad, grilled veggies, and lamb chops. Not surprisingly, Scott turned down the mixed greens.
