The concubine is killed and one by one members of the family start to die. The hero saves Renisenb in the end from the killer (her brother) and they get married. Not less than seven people are killed before the murderer is revealed.

The novel is reportedly based on the letters of an Egyptian man to his family complaining about the ill-treatment of his concubine.
