Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What disturbing news did Richard find out about while in Jagang's camp in the beginning of the book?

Answer: He had been named as a player for Orden.

While chained up serving as a slave for a Ja'La team, Richard was contacted and told that he had been named as a player for the power of Orden and thus had one year in order to open the correct box of Orden. He was told this by a kind of phantom, who in turn told Ulicia, a sister of the dark also in vie for the power of Orden.
2. What did Nicci figure out about Kahlan regaining her memory?

Answer: She must not have foreknowledge about her love for Richard.

Nicci realized that in order for the power of Orden to be able to bring back Kahlan's memory, she must have no prior knowledge of any significant emotions. Therefore it was important that she not be told that in her past she was in love with Richard. This foreknowledge would prevent the spell from reversing itself because it would not be able to overwrite her foreknowledge of love. Orden could only bring back her memories if she were a sterile field, meaning she didn't know about past emotions. It was ok if she were told about her past life or facts about it. Only emotional knowledge would stop her from regaining her memory.
3. What did Jagang do to make sure Kahlan didn't cause any trouble?

Answer: He hurt Jillian in place of Kahlan.

Jagang had rounded up several special guards in order to watch over Kahlan; these guards were able to see her when others could not. Although she was guarded by over 40 guards at one time, she started killing them one by one. Eventually Jagang captured Jillian and told Kahlan that he would punish Jillian whenever she did something that displeased him.
4. What did Richard do to make sure that he wouldn't be recognized by Jagang during Ja'La?

Answer: He painted his face in red symbols.

The first time he was approached by Jagang he deliberately fell into some mud in order to hid his face. After that he painted himself and his team with red paint so that on the field and while playing Ja'La he would not be recognized. He told his team that the red paint would intimidate their opponents and give them team recognition.

While this was true, it served the main purpose of hiding his identity.
5. Who put a spell on Rachel so that she became afraid of the Ghostly Gobblies?

Answer: Violet

Violet, or Queen Violet as she preferred, drew a spell that compulsed Violet to become afraid of creatures she created called the Ghostly Gobblies. The ghosts chased Rachel to the cave where she was supposed to be eaten. Rachel changed the spell at the last minute using chalk given to her by Shota so that the ghosts came after Violet instead.
6. What happened to Nicci when she and Cara arrived at the People's Palace?

Answer: She was captured by Jagang's sisters.

When Nicci arrived at the People's Palace she and Prelate Annalina went down toward Panis Rahl's (Richard's grandfather) tomb in order to conduct some research. Before they could reach the tomb, they were ambushed by Jagang's sisters using combined magical power. The Prelate and Nicci were overwhelmed; Annalina was killed and Nicci taken prisoner using a Rada Han.
7. Who started the riot at the Ja'La match?

Answer: Jagang

Jagang was the one who started the riot by trying to cheat and claiming that Richard's score didn't count. When the spectators heard this they became enraged and start to riot. Nicci made things worse by shouting "Jagang the Just has spoken"; her sarcasm is greeted with a backhand from Jagang but only added to the fire. Richard may have scored the last point to stun the crowd, but by trying to cheat and denounce Richard's action, Jagang showed the contradictions with the order's teaching and started the riot.
8. Who came into the camp of the Imperial Order to rescue (capture) Kahlan?

Answer: Samuel

Samuel, under orders and influence of Six, sneaked into the Imperial Order camp and rescued Kahlan leading her away from the Order. Kahlan eventually realized that he was actually capturing her and planning to return her to Six. Kahlan escaped, killed Samuel and eventually met up with Richard.
9. Which of the following characters did NOT make a return appearance in this book?

Answer: Jebra

Gratch, Ulic, and Chandalen all make a quick appearance in "Confessor". Gratch flew Rachel to the Mud People. Chandalen helped Richard back from the underworld. Ulic was the blonde D'Haran who helped Richard fight the Imperial Order soldiers in the palace. Jebra, however, did not make an appearance in "Confessor". Jebra was a seer who mysteriously disappeared in the previous novel "Phantom" after an encounter with Six.
10. How was Richard able to travel back to the world of the living after he entered the underworld?

Answer: Through the Mud People's Gathering

Richard traveled through the void he created in the Garden of life. He used Denna as a guide to be able to get there. Once there he encountered the beast and was able to destroy him. The Mud People were warned by Rachel and Chase to have a gathering in order to be able to help Richard. By having the gathering, they were able to open another void to the underworld so that Richard could get back.
11. What was strange about the book left for Richard by the wizard Barracus?

Answer: It was blank.

When Richard was finally able to obtain the book "Secrets of a War Wizard's Power" he found out that it was entirely blank. Zedd told him that it was meant to symbolize the last rule, the rule unwritten. He stated that Barracus wanted Richard to know that the secret to his power was an unwritten rule and that he had to figure it out on his own.
12. Who eventually killed Jagang?

Answer: Nicci

Nicci eventually killed Jagang. She captured him when he arrogantly walked into her cell expecting to be able to capture her. She slipped the collar on him and was able to control him. She killed him after the Sister's of the dark were consumed by Orden.
13. What was the key to the power of Orden?

Answer: The Sword of Truth

"The Book of Counted Shadows" ended up being of no use to Jagang and the sisters of the Dark. The book was created as a distraction to all who would use the power of Orden for evil. "The Book of Life" warned that those with the intention of hate would not be able to use the power of Orden.

The mention of confessors in "The Book of Counted Shadows" served as a timeline, so that Richard was able to determine that "The Book of Counted Shadows" were not necessary. The Sword of Truth was the ultimate key to the power of Orden. Those who created the sword intended for it to go to someone who would stand for truth, be able to turn the sword white, and be able to evoke Orden if needed.
14. Which of the following did Richard NOT do when he evoked the power of Orden?

Answer: Killed all the followers of the Imperial Order.

Using the power of Orden Richard created another world where he sent those of the Order, the Chainfire outbreak and also the pristinely ungifted, Jennsen's people. He did not outright kill the Order's followers but sent them to another world to live as they pleased.

He fixed the deterioration of magic caused by the chimes. He returned the Temple of the Winds to his world, the world of life. He fulfilled prophecy by creating the great void (other world) which prophecy could not see. He also removed the poison upon red fruit in midlands.
15. What was the Wizard's final rule, the rule unwritten and unspoken?

Answer: Strength without hate

The wizard's final and ultimate rule was the rule that Richard figured out, which also turned out to be a secret into unlocking the power of Orden. When the sisters of the dark tried to unlock Orden, they were destroyed because they wanted to use the power of Orden for hateful purposes. Richard on the other hand wanted to use the power for good.

He had the strength to do what was right, without hate in his heart. He allowed all the followers of the order to live as they pleased (in a different world) instead of just killing them all. "Strength without hate". Chapter 63, page 592, last sentence.
