1. The Overture mentions that Rakoth Maugrim is bound beneath which mountain?

Answer: Rangat

If you didn't get this right, go and read the book again! Rangat Cloud-shouldered is an overwhelming presence on the landscape, so no-one would forget. Starkadh is the stronghold of Rakoth, Banir Tal is one of the mountains under which the Dwarves live, and the Carnevon mountain range is east of Brennin and Cathal.

2. Lorenzo Marcus was speaking and chairing a panel at the Second International Celtic Conference. Who else is named as being on the panel?

Answer: Vince Martyniuk

Dave is only at the conference because his brother Vince is speaking. Loren Silvercloak is Marcus' real identity, Matt Soren is there but as his secretary, and Rachel Kincaid, besides being a cellist rather than an academic, has been dead for ten months at this point in the story.

3. At various points during the story, we encounter or are told of four of the Five's fathers. Whose father is not mentioned?

Answer: Paul Schafer

The major person in Paul's background seems to be Rachel; his parents are not mentioned. Rakoth takes the shape of James Lowell at first when he rapes Jennifer, we are told about how Kim's parents met when she is with Ysanne, and Dave's issues with his father Josef are a huge part of his character. Kevin's father is a major part of his life and the two have a very close relationship.

4. When they cross to Fionavar, the guard outside the room they arrive in is very rude to Loren until Matt adjusts his attitude a little. What was the guard's name?

Answer: Vart

Vart is one of the guards who dislikes the mages and supports the Chancellor. Drance is one of Diarmuid's men, Brendel is one of the lios alfar, and Tarn is the guard who meets them on the second (or third for Paul and Jennifer) crossing, but is still a page in the first book.

5. "Most hated by the Dark, for their name was Light." The representative of the lios alfar, Na-Brendel, belongs to which Mark?

Answer: Kestrel

Brendel of the Kestrel Mark is the only named lios alfar we meet in The Summer Tree. Those of the Swan Mark are dedicated to Lauriel the White and do not go to war. The Eagle and Swallow Marks do not exist (as far as I know!).

6. Sharra, the Dark Rose of Cathal, has had to deal with many marriage proposals. Which suitor does her father describe as "a callow fool"?

Answer: Venessar of Gath

Bragon is Venessar's father and gives the impression of being thoroughly unpleasant; Shalhassan describes him as "a brute". Levon never courts Sharra, and Diarmuid seduces her but has not proposed (yet).

7. How many times does Leila call Finn to the Longest Road before Jaelle recruits her to the service of Dana?

Answer: 4

When Jennifer witnesses the ta'kiena Finn is called for the third time, but it takes place once more before Leila becomes an acolyte. Once in the temple, Leila manages to both intrigue and infuriate Jaelle on a fairly consistant basis.

8. When Tabor undergoes the ritual fast to become a Rider, he sees an animal that does not yet exist - a flying chestnut unicorn. What is her name?

Answer: Imraith-Nimphais

Imraith-Nimphais was created by Dana to fight in the war. Avaia is the evil black swan that transports Jennifer to Starkadh. Lisen was a wood spirit who fell in love with a mortal (as the most beautiful woman in the world always does) and the triangle between her, her husband Amairgen, and Galadan is a constant presence in all three books, despite the fact that two of them are dead.

The Queen of the Waters is the dragon that lives in Calor Diman.

9. When Paul is on the Summer Tree, he is approached by three individuals before Mornir brings the rain. Who were they and in what order did they appear?

Answer: Galadan, Aileron, Dana

Galadan appears first and is intercepted by the grey dog. Aileron appears, accuses Paul of stealing his death and leaves again. Dana shows Paul that he was not responsible for the death of his lover. Mornir doesn't visit him directly, just sends the rain. Kevin respects that Paul has chosen death and just grieves for him. Gorlaes and Ailell take him to the Tree and bind him there, but they don't visit him after that.

10. Near the end of the book, Brock of Banir Tal reaches Paras Derval with the news that the Dwarves are responsible for releasing Rakoth Maugrim. Before he gives his news, Matt Soren speaks of his past. Who was the King of the Dwarves before Matt?

Answer: March

March was Matt's uncle, and the previous King. Kaen is the current ruler of the Dwarves but is not King, and Miach, who we meet in the third book, is another important Dwarf. Seithr was the King of the Dwarves during the Bael Rangat.
