Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character works for Cosgrove's and also smuggles Chinese artifacts out of the country to sell at auction?

Answer: Lily Sinclair

Lily works for Cosgrove's, a company that auctions high-value art in Hong Kong. She is working along with the others at Site 518. Brian McCarthy finds artifacts for her to smuggle out to Hong Kong to sell at auction, even though it is illegal for the artifacts to be removed from the country.
2. Hulan works for the Ministry of Public Security.

Answer: True

The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) is the Chinese equivalent of the United States' FBI. Her title is Inspector Liu Hulan and she is a detective. She has been investigating the All-Patriotic Society, but in the book she is assigned a murder case.
3. Around which Chinese river does most of the action in the book focus?

Answer: Yangzi

Much of the action in this novel is centered around the river. China is having a dam built on this river and many people are having to be relocated to other parts of China. There are factions that are against the building of the dam to protect the natural wonders and archaeological finds that will be underwater after completion of the dam.

The actual Yangzi River begins in Tibet and ends at the South China Sea, which makes it the third longest in the world.
4. What type of site is Site 518?

Answer: archaeological

Site 518 is located outside of Bashan at the Three Gorges section of the Yangzi River. The archaeologists in the novel are searching for artifacts to prove the age of Chinese civilization.
5. Who is the mysterious leader of the All-Patriotic Society?

Answer: Xiao Da

No one knows who the real Xiao Da is because he does not show himself. He doesn't even show himself at meetings with his followers. He meets with them in caves where he can sit on a higher level out of sight from them. At the end of the book, Hulan discovers who he really is.
6. What is David Stark's profession?

Answer: Lawyer

David is an American lawyer who is married to Liu Hulan. He and Hulan live in Beijing and he represents the firm Phillips & MacKenzie. He is hired by the Chinese Cultural Relics Bureau to look into the disappearance of Chinese artifacts from Site 518.
7. What is the name of the guesthouse in Bashan where the main characters stay?

Answer: Panda Guesthouse

The Panda Guesthouse had been the residence of the Wang family before the revolution/Liberation. Most of the family was killed during the revolution, but Mr. Wang escaped. Lily Sinclair represents the Wang family through her work at Cosgrove's and tells the story of how the guesthouse was being refurbished until the family found out that it would be below the water once the dam was finished.

The Wang family then turned it into the Panda Guesthouse to get some money out of it.
8. What is the name of Brian McCarthy's mycologist sister?

Answer: Angela

Before Brian is killed, he gets word to Angela that he believes that he has found something that will make her rich and solve her money problems. Angela begins her journey to China, only to find that Brian has been killed before she arrives.
9. Which of the Five Punishments is found by Pathologist Fong to link the murders of Brian and Lily?

Answer: Branding

Brian's body was badly deformed and mutilated by the river, but Pathologist Fong is able to find the imprint of a brand on his bones. Lily Sinclair has the same brand on her forehead. Lily also endures the cutting off the nose, cutting off the feet, and death. The Five Punishments are: branding on the forehead, cutting off the nose, cutting off the feet, castration, and death.
10. What item made of a type of fungus is found by Brian McCarthy in the caves under Site 518 and then sold at auction in Hong Kong?

Answer: Ruyi

Traditionally, a ruyi was given to a person by an emperor once the person was given an important mission or had completed an important task. The ruyi found by Brian McCarthy doesn't appear to hold much value to many people, but it could possibly be made of lingzhi fungus and could be that of Da Yu.
