Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In chapter 17, "The Boomtown of the Broken Down", which town is the title referencing?

Answer: Rush Valley

Also nicknamed "The Automail Engineer's Mecca", Rush Valley got its title from the many automail merchants and repair shops found in the town. Winry travels with the Elric brothers specifically because she wants to visit this city.
2. After Edward wins an automail armwrestling match against a man more than twice his size, he is mobbed by the onlookers wanting to know various things about his automail. In the fray, an item of Edward's is stolen. Which item is it?

Answer: A pocket watch

The pocket watch is used as proof that Edward is a state alchemist. The onlookers ended up stripping Edward down to his underwear, making the watch an easy steal. The thief is a girl by the name of Paninya and once Edward finds her, a chase ensues that lasts the remainder of the chapter.

At one point, Paninya is captured in an alchemically created cage only to quickly break free because, as it turns out, she has two automail legs which she uses to break the bars of the cage. She is eventually caught by Winry, who asks to examine Paninya's legs.
3. At Winry's insistence, Paninya leads the Elrics and Winry to the place where her automail was made. When they reach their destination, they are introduced to three people. Which of these is NOT one of the people they are introduced to?

Answer: Kain

Kain is the first name of Sergeant Major Fuery, a member of Roy Mustang's group in the military. Ridel and Satera LeCourt are husband and wife and Dominic is Ridel's father and the one who actually makes Paninya's automail. Paninya tried to sell Edward's watch in order to get money to pay Dominic back for the automail he made for her. Winry wants to become Dominic's apprentice, but Dominic turns her down.
4. When Paninya gave Winry Edward's watch, she pried it open out of curiosity, despite being told never to open it. Inside, there were two words followed by the date "3.Oct.11". What two words preceded this date?

Answer: Don't Forget

At this point, it is unclear what the significance of these words is, but it is obviously very important, as the words bring Winry to tears. When she calms down slightly, she decides to ask Dominic again to be his apprentice.
5. As Winry attempts to find the automail maker to ask him for a second time if she can be his apprentice, something makes her turn around quickly and run back. What is it?

Answer: A woman is about to give birth and she had to tell the father

When Winry comes rushing back to tell Ridel that Satera is in labor, Dominic tries to ride into town to get a doctor, but the downpour going on outside causes the bridge to town to snap. Edward tries to alchemically make a new bridge, but is unable to do so. After much worrying, Winry decides to be the one to deliver the baby, despite having no experience.
6. In chapter 19, "I'll Do It For You Guys!", during a conversation between Ed and Winry regarding the message inscribed on Ed's watch, what does Winry mention is the significance of the date?

Answer: It was the day Ed and Al left home

On that date, Ed and Al burned down their house and left Resembool. That was the day they decided to look for the Philosopher's Stone so that they could try to revive their mother. Ed inscribed the date in his watch to remind him to never turn back.
7. When the automail maker learns that Winry is the granddaughter of Pinako Rockbell, how does he react?

Answer: He becomes afraid and gives Winry a definite "no" to her being an apprentice

Dominic, in his panic, refers to Pinako as "The Pantheress of Resembool", causing Winry and the Elrics to wonder what their past history was like. However, Dominic refers Winry to another automail maker that may take her on as an apprentice and says that he couldn't stop her if she wanted to visit Dominic every now and then. Ed and Al leave Winry in Rush Valley and head off to visit their teacher.
8. In chapter 20, "The Terror of the Teacher", how could the Elrics' teacher, Izumi, tell that Al's armor was empty?

Answer: She threw him and felt how light he was

Izumi threw Al when she greeted him to try to teach him not to drop his guard, saying that he and Ed have gotten weak. Izumi also noticed that Ed had automail limbs because of the different sounds that each footstep made. This helped her realize that the brothers had attempted human transmutation and she wanted to know all of the details.
9. Chapter 21, "The Brothers' Secret" is entirely a flashback. In this flashback, what was Izumi doing when the brothers first met her?

Answer: Helping to stop a flood

Several people were out in a downpour trying to throw down sandbags to stop the flow of water, but they weren't working well enough. There is a crowd around watching, out of which Izumi steps and alchemically creates a wall to stop the flow of water. The Elrics witnessed this and decided to ask Izumi to teach them.
10. Before Izumi agreed to be the Elrics' teacher, she wanted to give them an exercise for them to prove that they were worthy of being taught. This exercise involved sending them to an island for one month without alchemy. Their first night on the island, an attacker in a mask appeared holding a weapon. What kind of weapon did he have?

Answer: A club

The attacker was standing over the brothers when Ed woke up in the middle of the night. He took a swing at Ed with his club but missed. He then warned Ed that the island was his and "all outsiders must die!" To be continued....
