Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Davey was blamed for Molly's pregnancy, but who was the man responsible?

Answer: Angus McBain

Angus BcBain owned the farm on which Davey an Molly worked; he tried to force Davey into marrying Molly as he was the likeliest 'culprit' where her pregnancy was concerned, but Davey was not to be bullied. McBain then asked Will Curran, who agreed, although Molly was not happy with the master's choice and remained unmarried.
2. Disturbed that she had discovered who was responsible for Molly's pregnancy, the pregnant Delia went walking and brought on the early birth of her son. He was born deformed and she was blamed (although we know these days that such deformities are not caused by premature labour). What was the nature of the deformity?

Answer: he had no legs

McBain ordered Molly to take the child and drown him in the river, but Molly was unable to do this. Just as she was about to turn around, Davey found her and together they saved the baby. Unfortunately, it was to be a long time before Davey believed that Molly was not going to commit murder.
3. What did Molly call her daughter?

Answer: Biddy

Biddy was only a little younger than her half-brother, Amos, who grew up in the attic rooms in the farmhouse, because his parents could not bear to look at him. He would look out at Biddy running around the farm yard and yearn to be free.
4. What special present did Amos get for his fifth birthday?

Answer: crutches

This brought on a rage as he hated to be reminded of his disability. Left to his own devices, however, Amos soon became amazingly proficient on his crutches and as he grew he was given longer ones.
5. What was the name of the ship of which Davey became Second Mate in the five years he was away from the farm?

Answer: Arcadia

Davey left because of the fuss over Molly's pregnancy, and returned through homesickness. He stayed just three days, but was to return home later.
6. Who taught Amos how to swim?

Answer: Davey

Davey was able to look past Amos' disability and encouraged him in all movement and acrobatics. Amos, however, was a wilful, vindictive child and was apt to hit out, pinch and in any way hurt people he felt slighted by.
7. By the time Amos was sixteen Cock Shield Farm was not the same prosperous place it had been; people said things got bad when Angus stopped attending the market. When did he stop?

Answer: when Amos started going to Hexham

Fred Geary was not as canny in the market place as Angus was, and was a gossip who kept everyone informed of what was happening on the farm.
8. After Delia's death Angus thought about marrying again, dashing Amos' hopes of inheriting the farm, as his prospective step-mother was a 'frustrated breeder' who would likely provide completely healthy sons. What was Amos' solution to this problem?

Answer: to murder his father

Amos climbed up onto a beam and lay in wait for his father; when he came he swung at him and caused him to fall down the stairs. This did not kill him; he was bedridden for a while. In this time Amos found his Will, and discovered that he had not even been mentioned - everything was left to his sister Jane. Angry, he appeared in the sick room and the shock of seeing him there finished Angus off.
9. Whom did Jane expect to marry?

Answer: Parson Hedley

Amos arranged some rocks on the tor and was able to push them down as Arnold Hedley drove on the road beneath. This killed him. While there was no evidence of his pushing his father down the stairs, it soon became known that he murdered the parson.
10. How did Amos die?

Answer: he was burned in the fire which destroyed the farm

Being brought up in the attic by women frightened of making too much noise or allowing him to escape warped Amos' mind and he was hell-bent on destroying everything he hated, and everything he loved. He was terrorising Jane when he started the fire, and both died as a result.
