Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen Quiz

This is the first book in almost 30 years to feature Cordelia as the main character. As in keeping with Bujold's books we get to see the events from both Cordelia's point of view and Jole's.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long has Aral Vorkosigan been dead when the story opens?

Answer: 3 years

Although the pain of his death is beginning to ease, Cordelia is beginning to come to terms with her loss. Her status as the Vicereine of Sergyar has allowed her to bury much of the pain of his loss, particularly as Miles is stuck on Barrayar and Mark is a travelling interstellar businessman.
2. What offer did Cordelia make to Jole when they were at the restaurant?

Answer: She offered him four 'ennucleated' eggs

Cordelia had always wanted more than just Miles, so she found she had six viable eggs. She offered Jole the casing of some of the non-viable eggs to produce sons for Jole.
3. What is 'Gentleman Jole's' official rank?

Answer: Fleet Admiral Sergyar

Jole and the Vorkosignas have known each other for decades right back to when he was Aral's ADC (see 'The Vor Game'). As the events in 'Gentleman Jole and The Red Queen' unfold he and Cordelia find they have more in common than a common love of Aral.
4. What little problem did Jole drop into Cordelia's lap?

Answer: A load of construction material

The Admiral and the Vicereine are working on building a new shuttleport (and, incidentally moving the capital). Unfortunately, although the material was cutting edge and everlasting when mixed, the individual components had a definite shelf life that would come to an end before work on the port was due to start.
5. When Cordelia made her offer to Jole, how many newcomers was she planning to add to her family?

Answer: Six girls

Cordelia had always wanted a large family after coming from population controlled Beta Colony. And, after Miles, boys had sort of lost their appeal. Besides the method used to create the embryos would only result in girls.
6. Admiral Jole is approaching a special birthday. What's the number that got everyone so excited?

Answer: 50

What's so special about fifty anyway?! Jole, frankly, is appalled at the way this party is spiralling out of control.

Both Aral and Miles had made it to Admiral by their 40s, though not necessarily under a recognised chain of command.
7. Miles finally does make it into the story. Who does he bring with him?

Answer: Ekaterin and his children

Miles is not on an Official Mission, quite, and the children don't get to see their grandmamma too often. It's quite unusual to see Miles as not in control of the situation he finds himself in this book.
8. At Jole's party what went wrong?

Answer: The fireworks set off an explosion in the radials gathered round the party

The radials use hydrogen to float in Sergyar's skies. Hydrogen and fire(works) don't mix. Miles had great reason to be grateful for Jole's actions during the incident.
9. Miles imparts some rather grim historical news about old Cetagendan plans. What had his mother and Jole sweating over the future?

Answer: The Cetagendans were just this close to using terminal biowarfare against Barrayar

A hidden bunker in the centre of Vorbarr Sultana (see 'Captain Vorpatril's Alliance') had plenty of background information on the true reason for the Cetagendan withdrawal. Miles and Ekaterin had already had up close and, in Miles' case, very personal, experience with Cetagendan bioweapons (see 'Diplomatic Immunity').
10. On her way to dinner one evening, Cordelia has an encounter with one of Miles's children. Which child was it?

Answer: Alex

Alex is sitting on a bench outside and Cordelia wonders what is going on in his head. She and Alex have an interesting chat about future career paths.

Selig is Alex's youngest brother. Helen is his twin sister and Freddie is acting as nanny/playmate to the Vorkosigan horde.
