Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ludmilla Droushnakovi, introduced in "Barrayar" and featured in "Mirror Dance" and "A Civil Campaign", had which job at the time of her introduction? It was a job which previously had not been offered to women.

Answer: Bodyguard to the Dowager Princess Kareen

Droushnakovi (also called "Drou") told Cordelia that the princess had been asking for female security agents for some time, but hadn't found someone who could pass all the tests until Drou came along. Cordelia lamented that Drou's talents were wasted on Barrayar, since on Beta Colony she'd have been a military or ship leader with her skills.
2. Taura of Jackson's Whole is a genetically engineered supersoldier, and was introduced in "Labyrinth" where she is rescued by the Dendarii mercenaries. A great accomplishment of hers, from "Winterfair Gifts", was strategic use of her heightened senses to do what?

Answer: Detect a poison used to attack Ekaterin Vorsoisson

In "Winterfair Gifts", a pearl necklace is sent to Ekaterin Vorsoisson on the occasion of her marriage to Miles Vorkosigan, with a note attributing the gift to Elli Quinn. Quinn, one of Miles' subordinates and ex-girlfriends, had sent another gift but, given her longstanding relationship with Miles, the second gift wasn't questioned. Taura, with her heightened senses, saw that the pearls were "dirty" - specifically, they had been painted with poison meant to kill Ekaterin. Taura's discovery saved Ekaterin's life.
3. Elena Bothari-Jesek, introduced in "Shards of Honor" and featured most heavily in "Warrior's Apprentice", is a founding member of the Dendarii Free Mercenary Fleet, and retires from that fleet in "Memory" - at what rank?

Answer: Captain

Elena is a captain when she and her husband Baz Jesek leave the fleet to live on Escobar and start a family. Elena eloquently puts forth her theory that, over the course of her life, she can do more than one thing - be a military officer, have a civilian career, and have a family.

Her inspiration is Countess Cordelia, whose life story contained multitudes and whose close influence had a great impact on Elena.
4. Ekaterin Vorsoisson, introduced in "Komarr" and a POV character in both "Komarr" and "A Civil Campaign", is a multi-faceted character who ends up with many accomplishments, but one particularly impressive moment is when she faces down a conservative Vor lord in the Council of Counts (in "A Civil Campaign"). Who is this lord, who accused Miles of murdering Ekaterin's husband, and used this accusation as attempted blackmail to get voted in as a Count?

Answer: Richars Vorrutyer

Richars Vorrutyer was the closest male heir to the late Count Pierre Vorrutyer until Pierre's sister Donna underwent a sex change operation on Beta Colony. Faced with Lord Dono Vorrutyer's challenge, Richars will stop at nothing to maintain his inheritance of the district.

When he publicly accuses Miles Vorkosigan of killing Ekaterin's husband, in an attempt to hold off charges of his own, Ekaterin shuts down his argument from her seat in the gallery of the Council chamber, to the amazement of all witnesses.
5. Kareen Vorbarra, featured in "Barrayar", is the Barrayaran Dowager Princess. She is Vidal Vordarian's chief hostage during his play for the Empire, and survives horrifying circumstances up to and including a forced marriage with the would-be Emperor. What is her last act of defiance against Vordarian, which she performs once she realizes that her son is alive?

Answer: Attempted murder of Vordarian

Vordarian tries to convince Kareen that her son Emperor Gregor was killed in the fighting, and when Cordelia displays evidence that this is not so, he starts scrambling. He insists that he is telling the truth and consoles the princess by saying that it'll be alright when they have a son together, which prompts Kareen to grab the nearest weapon and fire it at Vordarian.
6. Kareen Koudelka, named after Kareen Vorbarra, is a featured character in "Mirror Dance" and a POV character in "A Civil Campaign". Where does she study abroad when taking advantage of a scholarship for women (her time abroad roughly corresponding to the time of "Memory")?

Answer: Beta Colony

Kareen spends her time studying abroad on Beta Colony, the home planet of Countess Cordelia. Beta Colony's advanced science and technology renders its education of a very high, coveted status, and the social liberality of Beta Colony ends up having a major effect on the Barrayaran Kareen after her traditionally conservative upbringing.
7. Alys Vorpatril, introduced in "Barrayar" and featured player in many of the later books, becomes the capital hostess for Emperor Gregor for much of his reign - at least until he finds his wife. For which of the following events does she NOT take charge of some (or all) of the planning?

Answer: Cordelia and Aral's wedding (in "Shards of Honor")

Alys was not introduced to Cordelia until "Barrayar" and so could not have been involved in Cordelia and Aral's wedding (which does not get a scene in the books; rather there is a timeskip over this event). Alys does help coordinate fashion (including the bride's dress!) for the Drou/Kou wedding in "Barrayar", and she is the chief planner around Gregor's wedding.

She also coordinates parts of Aral's funeral, though Gregor overrides her when she explains that his proper place as Emperor is among the chief mourners - he insists on being a pallbearer himself, in recognition of all that Aral did for him throughout his life.
8. Elli Quinn, introduced in "Warrior's Apprentice" and a major player in "Ethan of Athos", "Brothers in Arms", "Mirror Dance", and "Memory", is a Dendarii Free Mercenary Fleet soldier who ends up running the fleet after Miles is forced into retirement. In "Mirror Dance", she saves Miles Vorkosigan's life by doing which of the following?

Answer: Doing an emergency cryo-prep after Miles is killed

In the raid on Bharaputra's clone creche, Miles is killed by a guard and Elli frees up a cryo-chamber to do a quick field freezing of Miles' corpse to make sure he can be revived. She has to empty the chamber to do it (resulting in the irreversible death of another Dendarii soldier), though she does try to recover the other previously frozen body as well.
9. Harra Csurik, of "Mountains of Mourning", is a woman from deep in the backwoods of the Vorkosigan district, in the Dendarii mountain range. She walks four days to Vorkosigan Surleau to report a crime (which her husband is alleged to have committed) to Count Vorkosigan, since no one in her village's law enforcement would help her press the charges. Which crime is this?

Answer: Infanticide

Harra's infant daughter Raina was found dead in her cradle at four days old. She had a harelip and cleft palate, which was considered a grave "mutation" in the backcountry. Most children with such birth defects were killed by their mothers, but Harra refused to do so, and upon finding her daughter dead was determined to get justice. Since she knew her husband had been there with the girl, she thought he was the culprit.
10. We can't leave out Cordelia Naismith, the ultimate power player and POV character of "Shards of Honor" and "Barrayar", as well as a featured player in several other books. She has a truly inspired moment while on an unauthorized mission during the Vordarian Pretendership. During this mission, whom does she execute?

Answer: Vidal Vordarian

She executes the Vordarian Pretendership leader himself, Count Vidal Vordarian ("Emperor Vidal", as the princess sarcastically refers to him). When Vordarian protests to Cordelia that he's of more use to her alive, she darkly retorts "you're no use to me at all". Then she assists Sergeant Bothari in executing the traitor.
