Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hercule Poirot is stumped in 'Lord Edgware Dies' when he fails to make sense of several clues, including a letter written by victim Carlotta Adams and a gold case with an obscure inscription. It isn't until Poirot, at a theater with Hastings, overhears a chance remark by a stranger. He then realizes his mistake was that he never asked a certain character about a certain object. Whom did he not ask about what?

Answer: Ellis about the glasses

The remark Poirot heard was "If they had just had the sense to ask Ellis in the first place." Although the stranger was referring to an Ellis in the film, Poirot realizes he never asked Ellis, Jane Wilkinson's maid, about the glasses he found in Carlotta's bag. Once she confirms those were her glasses, Poirot realizes it was Jane who killed Carlotta and Lord Edgware.
2. Young ladies almost always confide in Poirot about something, or so he claims. But Poirot was too trusting in one young lady who faked several attempts on her life, tricking Poirot into believing someone was trying to kill her. When this lady's cousin is killed, Poirot believes it was an accident and his lady friend was the intended victim. In reality, she has been the killer all along. Who is this woman?

Answer: Nick Buckley

The murderess in 'Peril at End House' is Nick Buckley who tricked Poirot into thinking she was engaged to the wealthy and recently declared dead Michael Seton. In reality, Nick's cousin, Maggie was engaged to him and was left everything in Michael's will. Since, no one knew of the engagement, Nick was easily able to fool Poirot once she killed Maggie.
3. Poirot's mistake in 'Mrs. McGinty's Dead' is that he claims he knows more than he really does. The result is that someone tries to push him off of a train platform. Although Poirot has no evidence, he is certain he knows who tried to kill him. Who did he suspect of attempted murder?

Answer: Dr. Rendall

Dr. Rendall did not think Poirot was in Broadhinny to investigate Mrs. McGinty's murder, which everyone believed James Bentley was guilty of, but rather the mysterious death of the first Mrs. Rendall.
4. What mistake did Poirot make in 'Murder on the Orient Express' that delayed his solving of the crime?

Answer: He does not realize the train has entered a new time zone until later in the novel

Since everyone in the Calais Coach is in cahoots, there are several pieces of intentional misdirection set up to confuse Poirot. However he does not fall for any of them. He does, along with most everyone else, fail to realize the train is in a different time zone, which changes the time of death.
5. When he receives a letter from ABC in the 'ABC Murders', Poirot errs by focusing everyone's attention on the St. Leger horse race instead of focusing on the whole town of Doncaster. This proves fatal for someone when the killer strikes elsewhere. Where does ABC claim his fourth victim in Doncaster?

Answer: The movie theater

ABC stabbed George Earlsfield in the cinema hall. By this point in the story, ABC has already accomplished his goal and it did not matter who the next victim was.
6. Not all of Poirot's missteps lead to tragedy. In 'After the Funeral', Poirot attempts to disguise himself as Monsieur Pontalier only to have the disguise fail when he is recognized by which member of the Abernathie family?

Answer: Rosamund Shane

Although she had never met Hercule Poirot before, Rosamund recognized Poirot from seeing his picture in newspapers. Poirot often brags about his infamy, even to the point where he complains if someone does not recognize his name, so he should have realized such a simple disguise would fail.
7. In 'The Clocks' Poirot realizes that he made an error in his investigation. If he had just flipped over the piece of paper that read M 61 Crescent, he would have found the murderer at 19 W Crescent.

Answer: False

This is Colin Lamb's mistake. Ironically, Mr. Curry's murderers live at 61 Wilbraham Crescent. Miss Pebmarsh, who lives at 19 Wilbraham Crescent where the body was found, is the traitor Colin is searching for throughout the novel.
8. In his last case, 'Curtain', Poirot successfully prevents one murder from occurring, but cannot stop another when which person dies?

Answer: Mrs. Franklin

Poirot was able to drug Hastings which prevented him from killing Major Allerton, whom he believed was in love with his daughter Judith. Colonel Lutrell "accidentally" shot his wife Daisy, but she survived without Poirot interfering.
9. Also in 'Curtain', Captain Hastings makes a mistake that proves fatal for someone else. What exactly did Hastings do that resulted in that person's death?

Answer: He spun the bookcase table around

In trying to find an answer to a crossword puzzle, Hastings spun the bookcase table around, unintentionally mixing up a poisoned cup of tea with a good one. The would-be murderer, Mrs. Franklin, drank the poison and died.
10. Agatha Christie believed she made a mistake by putting Hercule Poirot in which novel?

Answer: Sad Cypress

Christie felt that 'Sad Cyrpess' was a village mystery better suited for Miss Marple or even an entirely different character.
