Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Isabel and Jamie were thrilled but surprised to hear baby Charlie speak his first word. What was it?

Answer: Olive

Charlie had unusual taste for a baby. He liked quiche and quail eggs, and he was particularly fond of olives. So perhaps it was not surprising that Charlie blurted out "olive" when Jamie was giving him a sliced olive one day.
2. To what did Minty invite Isabel, Jamie and Charlie?

Answer: Her son Roderick's birthday party

Minty ran into Isabel, Jamie and Charlie at a café and introduced them to her son, Roderick. She then invited them to Roderick's birthday party. Jamie wasn't very happy about it; he thought Roderick was a bully, and he didn't like Minty, but he went along anyway.
3. What did Minty ask Isabel to do?

Answer: Help her deal with Roderick's father

Minty had invited Isabel to Roderick's party so that she could talk to her about a problem. It turned out that Roderick wasn't Minty's husband's son but rather he was the result of an affair she had had. Now Jock, Roderick's father, wanted to be a part of his son's life, and Minty was scared that her husband would find out about it, so she wanted Isabel to talk with Jock to get him to change his mind.
4. What major change occurred in Isabel's life?

Answer: She became engaged

Jamie had previously asked Isabel to marry him, but it was more of a suggestion than a proposal so Isabel had told him that they should wait. She later regretted doing so and tried unsuccessfully to bring the subject up again. But one evening while they were singing and playing the piano, Jamie suddenly asked her again and she accepted.
5. Professor Lettuce visited Edinburgh and met Isabel for lunch. What did he tell her to do?

Answer: Resign her editorship of the "Review of Applied Ethics" journal

Christopher Dove had sent Isabel a letter informing her that one of the articles she included in the journal contained a plagiarized passage. Isabel contacted the author who admitted that he must have accidentally included it, and Isabel was going to include a note to that effect in the next issue.

But Professor Lettuce had a letter that the plagiarized author supposedly sent to Isabel which warned her of the problem; Lettuce said that since she had ignored the problem, she needed to resign her editorship. Isabel, however, had discovered an article in which Christopher Dove himself had plagiarized another author in one of his papers, and Lettuce backed down after she told him about this.
6. Cat's new boyfriend/fiancé, Bruno, worked as a stunt man. What was his particular skill?

Answer: Tightrope walking

When Isabel told Cat that she was engaged, Cat quickly replied that she was engaged too. Eddie had informed Isabel that Cat's fiancé was a tightrope walker - a funambulist, as Isabel replied to him. Alas, their engagement was short-lived. Cat had distracted Bruno during one of his routines, causing him to fall off the wire, and he screamed at her in front of the crowd.
7. Why did Isabel hire a man to trap Brother Fox?

Answer: The fox was injured, and she wanted to get him treated

Jamie had noticed that Brother Fox appeared to be wounded, so Isabel wanted to get him treated by a vet. She had a man set a trap for the fox, and when the fox was captured, the vet, Simon, came to the house and fixed up the fox. Simon refused to accept payment for his work, since Brother Fox didn't belong to anybody, but it cost Isabel one hundred pounds to have the fox trapped.
8. George Finesk had threatened legal action against Minty because he had lost money on a transaction she had handled unethically. How did Minty stop him?

Answer: She sent him a threatening letter with Isabel's signature

According to George, Minty had talked him into investing in a project but had neglected to tell her that she was selling some of the property to herself, which reduced the value of his investment. He wanted to sue her or at least damage her reputation, so she sent him a letter in which she threatened action against him for vandalizing her home.

She used Isabel's signature on the letter; she copied it from the guestbook at Roderick's birthday party.
9. Why did Jock give up trying to see his son, Roderick?

Answer: He believed that Isabel was going to destroy his career

Minty had asked Isabel to see Jock and try to talk him into abandoning his efforts to see Roderick. Isabel met with him, but Jock told her that he wanted to have a relationship with his son because he couldn't have more children. However, he later told Isabel that he was giving up his quest because he believed she was trying to sabotage his career; he told her that he had been told that Minty had hired an "enforcer" who would cause him trouble at work.

He believed Isabel when she told him that she would never do so, but he still wanted to give up trying to see Roderick to protect his career.
10. What word did Peter Stevenson use to describe Minty?

Answer: Wicked

Isabel had believed that Minty truly needed her help, but Jamie wasn't so sure that Minty could be trusted. He had run into Peter Stevenson in town, and Peter had told him that Minty was in trouble, but since it was unlikely that Peter would know about Roderick's real father, Isabel went to see Peter to find out what he knew. Peter told her about an accusation of financial impropriety against Minty, and he warned Isabel that Minty was wicked. Isabel pondered this a while, wondering if someone could truly be wicked.
