Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What future right-hand man does Nicolae meet in this novel?

Answer: Leon Fortunato

When Nicolae began to expand his political sphere, he decided to hold positions at all three branches of the Romanian military. He wanted to be both a business lecturer and a student at the military academies to increase the strength of his "pacifist" platform.

He quickly learned that there was a man who had already created this strategic position for himself - Leon Fortunato. Intrigued by the insight of this man who clearly is intelligent yet has not become famous, Nicolae invites him to dinner. Over dinner, the two men determine that they are a perfect match: Leon as "kingmaker" and Nicolae as "king."
2. Why does Nicolae seek the ruin of his electoral opponent Emil Tismaneanu?

Answer: Tismaneanu stole Nicolae's investment manager.

Nicolae starts to make investments in technology in order to help him both make money and assert control over a larger population. In doing so, he attempts to invest in a new oral-cellular communications company (the phone is implanted in the mouth). However, he is outbid at the last minute by a competitor (Tismaneanu), who bribed the Carpathia International broker into coming to work for him. Nicolae is infuriated, of course, and has his traitorous employee murdered. Additionally, he vows that he will win Tismaneanu's office in the upcoming election.
3. What office does Nicolae seek in this book?

Answer: Election to the lower parliament

Nicolae sets his sights on a seat in the lower parliament of Romania. Although Nicolae had always intended to go into politics (his self-proclaimed goal is to rule the world), the selection of this particular seat was fueled by a desire for revenge on the incumbent (Tismaneanu).

As Tismaneanu is assassinated two days before the election, Nicolae manages not only to exact his revenge on his enemy but also gains control of the lower parliament seat. From this position, Nicolae makes the Romanian presidency his next ambition.
4. What kind of technology investment does Nicolae make in this novel (it is used later in the series as a key component for expanding his influence over the world)?

Answer: Solar-cellular communication

Nicolae works with a man named Corona to line up cellular communications investments. He initially attempts to purchase the rights to oral-cellular technology, but loses to Tismaneanu. However, this technology defaults to Nicolae following Tismaneanu's death. Nicolae then chooses to fund a riskier technology - solar-powered cell phones.

This investment proves much more useful to Nicolae in the long run. After the world is in ashes following World War III, Nicolae uses this solar technology to create a communications network completely controlled by himself.
5. What church does Irene's friend Jackie recommend she try?

Answer: New Hope

Jackie convinces Irene to give New Hope a try. Irene is thrilled with the new church, for several reasons. She loves the feeling of community, and the way the pastor personally talks to each attendee. Additionally, she enjoys the way the pastor tackles the more ambiguous passages in the Bible, and bases his sermons on making the Bible understandable. Irene's biggest criticism of their previous church is that the sermons were only vaguely related to the Bible and contained mostly musings from the pastor instead of biblical knowledge. Chloe attends New Hope once, and appears to reluctantly like it, though she never attends again. Irene never managed to get Rayford there. Central was the name of a church that Rayford used to attend.
6. Which two members of the Steele household attend church regularly their entire lives?

Answer: Irene and Raymie

Irene and Raymie both attend church regularly, and switch to New Hope where they become true believers. Irene in particular becomes aggressive about getting Chloe and Rayford to come to church with her, but she pushes too hard. Neither becomes a believer during the course of the book, and the result is that Irene's relationships with Chloe and Rayford become very strained.
7. How does Rayford typically spend his Sunday mornings when he is not in flight?

Answer: Playing golf

Put off by his wife's newfound faith, Rayford does everything in his power in order to avoid being home on Sunday mornings because he is afraid he will be dragged to church. He often tries to schedule flights on Sundays, and joins a weekly golf game. Irene counters this by suggesting the family attend the Saturday evening service at New Hope, but Rayford refuses.

The book does mention that Rayford works out, but neither working out nor going sailing is described as a Sunday morning routine for him.
8. What future Tribulation Force pilot does Rayford meet when sent to Jordan on a government assignment?

Answer: Abdullah Ababneh

The CIA asks Rayford to fly out to Jordan to get advice on how to more carefully guard against acts of terrorism on commercial airlines. There Rayford meets Abdullah, and they become quite friendly. Rayford even picks up some black market trade from Abdullah. Abdullah is simultaneously going through a personal crisis, as his wife has converted from Islam to Christianity. Abdullah is featured prominently throughout the majority of the "Left Behind" books.
9. Whose funeral does Buck miss by hours?

Answer: His mother's

In the midst of Buck's transition between college life and his move to Boston, he learns that his mother is gravely ill with cancer. Buck does not realize how serious the illness is, and, despite getting calls from his brother, does not make the visit a priority.

He does eventually scrape together enough money to make a flight, but is presented with an award on the same evening. His car breaks down on the way to the airport after the award presentation, so he does not make it out. Buck is at the airport, about to leave to see his mother, when he gets the news that she has passed away.
10. With what event does this book end?

Answer: The Russian air strike on Israel

The book closes with Buck believing that he is about to die. Russian missiles are being dropped overhead, and there is no hope of survival. Buck had gone to Israel to interview Chaim Rosenzweig for Global Weekly's "Newsmaker of the Year" award, following Chaim's discovery of a formula that will allow crops to grow on infertile ground. Chaim plays yet another crucial role in the "Left Behind" series.

The Rapture is described in only two books: "The Rapture" and "Left Behind," and Kenneth Bruce is not born until after the Rapture.
