Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dexter Whitlaw is presumed to be a homeless man in the beginning, but after his homicide Detective Chastain finds out he was in the military. Who was his killer?

Answer: Rick Medina

In an interesting twist, both Whitlaw and Medina were in the army at the same time, until Medina was hired to kill Whitlaw after he went rogue. Unfortunately, Medina was murdered mere seconds after killing Whitlaw.
2. Also in the beginning of the book, Karen was returning home from work when she noticed that she had a package from Dexter. Why did she not open it?

Answer: Dexter abandoned Karen and her mother

After Dexter came back from the war, he began to drift in and out of their lives. When he mailed the package, it was for her mother but Jeannette had passed away three weeks earlier. Reeling from grief and hurt, Karen put the package away unopened.
3. Why did Detective Marc Chastain dislike Karen at first?

Answer: He thought she turned her father out onto the streets.

Of all the homeless American citizens, more than a third suffer from mental and physical disabilities. Rather than deal with these issues, a lot of the relatives choose to send the disabled away and this is what Chastain believed Karen had done.
4. When Carl Clancy broke into Karen's apartment, what did she defend herself with?

Answer: A can of hairspray

She managed to blind him with the hairspray and escape into the hallway, where two responding officers shot and killed him.
5. When Jess McPherson managed to see Marc Chastain about the deaths of Medina and Whitlaw, Chastain asked him was he "satellites or pickles." Jess responded "pickles." To what/whom was he referring to?

Answer: His job with the CIA

Apparently, the CIA got the nickname "pickle" because they were always in a pickle, get it?
6. After thinking about why someone would want her dead, Karen remembered the package from Dexter that she never opened. Where did she put it?

Answer: Buckeye Stockit and Lockit

In the book, it mentions that she had unit 152 and it was found by stealing her canceled checks.
7. Who was Raymond Hilley?

Answer: He was the right hand man of Senator Lake

Apparently he more than a lackey; he was a gofer, mercenary, hired killer, cleaner, adviser, and nurse all in one deadly package.
8. Senator Lake and Raymond Hilley cornered Karen and Chastain in the storage unit to kill them after Karen and Chastain found the package from her father. There was a book inside; why did Senator Lake want the book?

Answer: It was Dexter's kill book and Lake hired Dexter to kill his brother

Lake's older brother was supposed to be the "heir" to the Lake dynasty, but once he was killed Stephen Lake stepped up to become senator and planned to be president. Before he could continue in his quest, he had to get rid of Dexter, the only other person who knew what he'd done.
9. Who killed Raymond Hilley?

Answer: Senator Lake

When Hilley realized that Chastain was saying that Lake had his brother killed, he wanted to see the book for himself. Rather than let him, Senator Lake killed him.
10. Karen was really mad at John Medina in the end, even though everyone was okay and Lake was dead. She wanted to know why he waited to kill Lake even though he'd already shot Marc in the chest, and he replied ...?

Answer: "Yours wasn't the only father killed, Miss Whitlaw."

Rick Medina was John Medina's father. Although Rick was valued by the CIA, John was prized and considered "classified." For fear of exposure, he couldn't live a normal life so he had to work behind the scenes. Rather than kill Senator Lake outright, he wanted to know Lake's part in his father's death, and as it turns out, Lake had the older Medina killed.
