Taku was the name of Mother's little dog. Toto is the dog from "The Wizard of Oz" and Tama is the name of the cat from the anime series "Fushigi Yuugi."

Kanako was the geisha Hatsumomo traded hair ornaments with one night and Ichikimi was, according to Hatsumomo, "A bit stupid and as awkward as a cripple."

Kayoko was Mother's first name. Kazuko was one of Mameha's maids and Korin was Hatsumomo's friend.

His number one fan was Hatsumomo because he once said she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. But she got drunk and angry at him at a party and she bit him, causing her to be thrown out into the street.

Yoegoro was another Kabuki actor. Asami was one of Mameha's maids and Hatsumiyo was Pumpkin's geisha name.

This may have been a mistake on Mr. Golden's part but in one part of the book he says Shizue had been the mistress of a pharmacist for thirty years but later says she was the mistress of a bank director for over thirty years. So either there are two geisha named Shizue or she really got around!

10. In 1956, the Chairman arranged for his eldest daughter to marry a man who would become his heir. The man called the wedding off at the last moment. What was his name?

Answer: Nishioka Minoru

The wedding's cancellation really upset the Chairman. He would even snap at Sayuri for the least little thing.
