Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was wrong with Aunt Gert?

Answer: She had a hard time breathing.

Aunt Gert had a hard time breathing because when she was younger, she would talk in her sleep. Her mother didn't usually like what she was saying, so she wouldn't give her dinner that week. Gert had to learn how to sleep holding her breath.
2. Why did Jay and Arty have to stay with their grandmother and aunt?

Answer: Their father was out of money.

Arty and Jay's mother had been in a hospital for a long time, and the hospital bills had used up the last of their father's money. He needed to travel throughout the south selling scrap metal, and Jay and Arty couldn't go with him, so they were sent to live with their grandmother and Aunt Bella.
3. What was the name of Aunt Bella's fiance?

Answer: Johnny

Grandma Kurnitz did not want Aunt Bella to get married to Johnny because he was mentally unstable and had a difficult time learning things, as did Bella. They would not survive very long on their own.

Answer: Rose and Aaron

Rose was only a baby when she died, but Aaron was almost twelve, as Bella tells Jay and Arty near the beginning of the play.

6. What did Grandma make for Arty when he was sick, that he detested?

Answer: German mustard soup

It was nasty stuff, but it brought his fever down right away.
7. Where did Aunt Bella stay after she ran away?

Answer: at Gert's house

Gert let Bella stay with her when she had run away, intending to get married to Johnny. Gert and Bella had always been very close, and they needed to keep it a secret from Grandma Kurnitz.
8. Where did Bella meet Johnny?

Answer: at the movies

Johnny was an usher at the movie theatre, where Bella frequently went. Grandma was always annoyedwith her because she frequently stayed at the movies very late and woke everyone up when she came home.
9. What does Uncle Louie do at the end of the play?

Answer: join the army
