Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What words in Melanie's message to her husband help Jack decide to take on the case?

Answer: "Only Repairman Jack can find me. Only he will understand."

Jack doesn't want to take on a missing persons case. That isn't his usual type of job, and he tells Melanie's husband, Lew Ehler, that he should go to the police. However, Jack is really intrigued by Melanie's words, and he wants to know why Melanie would say them. He doesn't know Melanie, and he's never heard of her.
2. In Lew's basement, the scars on Jack's chest begin to itch. What weird thing does Jack see in the basement of Lew's house?

Answer: a rope ladder that disappears into concrete

The weird thing, besides the obvious part about the ladder disappearing into the concrete, is that although the rope looks new, the concrete appears to be the original concrete of the basement floor. Jack doesn't know it at the time, but the reason his scars itch near that area is because the area is a gateway for the "Otherness".

In first book of the "Repairman Jack" series, "The Tomb", creatures from the "Otherness" called rakosh give Jack those scars while he is trying to rescue Vicky.

The term "Otherness" is first spoken in this book, by members of SESOUP. Although Jack doesn't see deformed children in the basement (and he definitely doesn't see a grave or a miniature elephant), there are two characters in this book who were born with deformities. Those characters are Melanie and Frayne Canfield.
3. For what group is the term SESOUP an acronym?

Answer: Society for the Exposure of Secret Organizations and Unacknowledged Phenomena

The members of SESOUP include ufologists, conspiracy theorists, and believers in the coming of the End Times, which was prophesied in Revelations.
4. Characters in which movie starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are referred to in this book?

Answer: Men in Black

The "men in black" in this book are believed to be secret government agents. Many of the members at the SESOUP conference are confused about the role of the "men in black". Jack believes that they are probably on the side of the "Otherness". Only Sal Roma and Mauricio seem to be fully sure of the goal of the "men in black".
The movie entitled "Men in Black", starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, was released in 1997. It was about two men belonging to a secret government agency who keep a close watch on the activities of aliens on Earth.
"Space Cowboys", starring Tommy Lee Jones but not Will Smith, was released in 2000. It's about a group of people who have to save the earth from an old Russian satellite that is about to crash into the earth's atmosphere.
"Independence Day", starring Will Smith but not Tommy Lee Jones, was released in 1996. It's about aliens coming to attack the earth.
"Man of the House", starring Tommy Lee Jones but not Will Smith, was released in 2005. It's about a Texas Ranger who has to protect a group of cheerleaders who were witnesses to a murder.
5. Jack was hired to check out a man who was abusing his wife. After Jack has done the job, why doesn't the wife's brother (the one who hired Jack to do the job) want to see or hear from Jack again?

Answer: He thought that Jack killed his brother-in-law.

Oscar Schaffer hired Jack to somehow stop his brother-in-law, Gus Castleman, from beating Oscar's sister (and Gus's wife), Ceilia. Jack had been watching the Gus and Ceilia through the windows of their home one night. All Jack was going to do was watch, but when he saw Gus start beating Ceilia and not stop, Jack felt that he had to intervene. Jack pretended to be a thief, but during the course of the confrontation, Gus revealed to Ceilia that he really hated her. Jack locked Ceilia in the closet while he knocked Gus around a bit, and then he tied Gus up and broke his legs.

He then opened the closet before he left the house. Ceilia was so upset at finding out that Gus hated her, that she tortured and mutilated Gus, and Gus died from blood loss. Oscar thought that Jack had tortured, mutilated, and killed Gus.
6. Olive Farina was missing from the hotel where the SESOUP convention was being held. What does Jack find when he checks her room?

Answer: He finds Olive's dead body.

When Jack went to pick the lock on Olive's room, he found that it had been latched from the inside. He found an open window and saw clothing all over the place. Jack then saw Olive's dead body on the bed, horribly mutilated. When Jack looked out into the hallway, he saw Mauricio, Roma's monkey (who is no ordinary monkey) coming out a room near Olive's.

He also sees one of the "men in black" hurrying away down the hallway. We never do find out for sure who killed Olive.
7. During Jack's stay at the convention hotel, two crates appear in his room. Who is the famous (real-life) inventor whose name F. Paul Wilson used in this book as the name of the creator of an unusual device?

Answer: Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla's name was found inside of a crate which held some pieces of the device. Tesla is famous for his work with alternating current, wireless communication, and mechanical resonance technology. The latter is the basis of the technology behind medicine's MRI machines.
Albert Einstein, of course, is famous for his theory of relativity. Alexander Graham Bell gave us the telephone, among other things. Guglielmo Marconi is probably best remembered for his invention of the telegraph.
8. In "Conspiracies", F. Paul Wilson mentions a certain area of Nikola Tesla's work. This work of Tesla's was also talked about in Wilson's previous book, "Legacies". What work of Nikola Tesla did F. Paul Wilson incorporate into these two books?

Answer: broadcast power

Nikola Tesla built, but never completed, at tower in Shoreham, Long Island, New York. This tower was called the Wardenclyffe Tower. It was also known as the Tesla Tower. Wardenclyffe Tower was named after James S. Warden, who donated the land for Tesla to build the tower.

The tower was to be used for commercial trans-Atlantic broadcasting, as well as to demonstrate power transmission without the need for interconnecting wires. J. P. Morgan had been providing funding for Tesla's tower. However, when costs got too high, Morgan decided not to invest any further, and the tower was never completed.
9. Who or what comes out of the hole in Lew Ehler's basement floor?

Answer: Melanie Ehler

When the device is brought out to Lew's house and set up in the basement, over the area of the rope ladder, a huge hole opens up in the floor. Melanie climbs up the rope ladder and out of the hole. She says that she has found the way to the "Otherness". Melanie wants her friend, Frayne Canfield to go back into the hole with her. She also wants Jack to go into the hole with them. When Jack declines, he is handcuffed to a beam in the basement. As the hole enlarges, Jack almost ends up inside of it, but he gets away just in time.
10. Who or what causes the hole in the basement floor to change?

Answer: the "men in black"

The hole just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Jack almost falls in again, and the "men in black" do fall in, along with a van. Mauricio tries to stop the "men in black" from going into the hole, and he is incinerated in the white fiery light that shoots up out of the hole. The light shoots up into the sky and then fades away. After that, all that's left is a plain, ordinary hole in the ground.
