Thule is a dying station, rapidly heading towards shut-down and being scrapped. Bet was laid off her previous 'hire-on' for financial reasons at Thule, and has been hanging on grimly, surviving for a year waiting for another ship willing to hire her as crew.

2. When Bet was a marine, which was her ship?

Answer: Africa

Bet was a tac-squad sergeant with 20 years seniority on board Africa when she was left behind on Pell docks during the Fleet retreat.

3. Bet volunteered aboard her Fleet ship to get away from the mining station ship where she was born. How old was she at the time?

Answer: 16

Bet hated the Pan-Paris mining ship where she spent the first 16 years of her life, so when Africa took it she decided to volunteer aboard rather than be conscripted.

Loki is a 'spook' ship; they have Alliance papers but operate very close to the edge of the Law. They don't care about Bet's dubious past and hire her on as crew.

The rest of the crew hate Ramey because they blame him for an accident which killed a fellow crew member. He is tolerated because he is very good at his job and keeps the ship going when nobody else could.

Bet is amazed when she is shown the suits aboard Loki. She has to fix them as quickly as possible to stand a chance of saving the ship when it comes under attack, and half kills herself to do so.

Fitch is the Mainday First Officer and he and Bet hate each other. They are forced to work together to defend the ship and manage to do so successfully.
