Sarong It's Been Good To Know You Quiz

Douglas Adams managed to imbue his "Hitchhiker's" stories with so many "far out" characters but they're too often overshadowed by the stars of his books. Here's a look at some of those minor beings.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The loudest band in the universe

Answer: Disaster Area

Author Douglas Adams reportedly based these guys on his local heroes Pink Floyd and, rather than just claiming Disaster Area to be the loudest band in the universe, he goes a step further to say that they're the loudest noise... anywhere! Attending a Disaster Area concert means taking safety precautions. Because of their volume you will need to take your seat in a thick walled concrete bunker, at least 37 miles away from the stage. Zaphod, Trillian, Ford and Arthur get to meet the band's keyboardist, Hotblack Desiato, during the novel "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" (1980) though, at the time, he was attached to a death support system as he was spending a year dead "for tax reasons".
2. An Ameglian Major Cow

Answer: Dish of the Day

First appearing in "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" (1980) the Ameglian Cow is bred specifically to be eaten. No, that's not quite right. It is bred with an inbuilt desire to be eaten. When the cow presents itself to Arthur Dent at Milliways, Arthur is horrified by this thought, so much so that he only orders a green salad.

This, in turn, greatly upsets the cow. Zaphod (Beeblebrox) then orders four rare steaks and the Dish happily announces that it is heading off to the kitchen to shoot itself, humanely of course.
3. Creature that's constantly being killed by Arthur Dent and reincarnated

Answer: Agrajag

We are officially introduced to Agrajag for the first time in the third book of the series, "Life, the Universe and Everything" (1982) as a sad little creature who is constantly being reincarnated. He needs to be reincarnated on a regular basis because he keeps getting killed by Arthur without Arthur realizing what he's done.

As a consequence Agrajag is now set on revenge and has Arthur in his sights. In "Life, the Universe and Everything" we discover that a number of incidents that we were introduced to in the first two novels were events that ultimately led to one of Agrajag's passings.

For example, In "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (1979), two missiles have been fired at the ship, Heart of Gold, where Artur is one of the passengers. Before they can hit, the ship's Improbability Drive turns one into a sperm whale and the other into a bowl of petunias.

The bowl of petunias, we find out two books later, is Agrajag. It crashes to the earth and dies but not before seeing Arthur staring at him from the spaceship's window.
4. Shipboard computer on the starship Heart of Gold

Answer: Eddie

All of the systems on the Heart of Gold are embedded with the Sirius Cybernetics Genuine People Personality and Eddie is no exception. What's worse is that he possesses two personalities: one that simply will not stop talking and gets over-excited way too easily, and the other who behaves like an old mother hen. Eddie is also connected to everything on board the ship and this nearly leads to disaster when Arthur Dent orders a cup of tea from the ship's drink dispenser; it doesn't understand, which nearly shuts down Eddie and cause the ship to crash.
5. A singer who died in 1977

Answer: Elvis Presley

This character appears in the novel "Mostly Harmless" (1992) and it is suggested that Elvis is really an alien who faked his own death on Earth so that he could return home. Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect find him working as a singer in a bar on a distant planet. Elvis is not specifically named in the book but the clues that are put before you are designed to lead you toward that conclusion. For example:
-A pink spaceship with the initials EP on the side.
-The bar at which he is the sole performer is named "The Domain of the King".
6. Melon sized security robot enslaved by Ford Prefect

Answer: Colin

In the novel "Mostly Harmless" (1992) Colin, who is also known as Part #223219B, is captured by Ford Prefect and has his circuits re-wired so that he's placed into some form of cyber-ecstasy, which leaves him in a constant state of cheerfulness. Ford is then able to utilize Colin's excessive happiness to break into the Guide's accounting system, where he plants a computer programme that will automatically clear his credit card every time he uses it.

When the Vogon security force discovers him Ford throws himself out of a high storey window in a bid to escape. Colin manages to rescue him.
7. A top genetic engineer

Answer: Blart Versenwald III

Blart Versenwald was given the mission of creating an army of super soldiers to defend his home world in "So Long and Thanks For All the Fish" (1984). However, Blart has a problem - a short attention span. He gets easily distracted by other great ideas that he has and, instead of building the super soldiers, he ends up creating an "off" button for children and a fly that understands the difference between solid glass and an open window. Just as he's completed these things the invaders land. By some happy coincidence these inventions are exactly what the invaders were looking for and so, instead of extermination, there were peace treaties and trade agreements drawn up between the two worlds.
8. Poet-master of the Azgoths of Kria

Answer: Grunthos the Flatulent

The Azgoths are the second worst poets in the Galaxy. If you're not convinced, look it up in the Guide where they provide you with an example of the poetry of Grunthos. The Guide will tell you that during his recital of "Ode to a Small Lump of Green Putty I Found in My Armpit One Midsummer Morning", four of the audience members died of internal hemorrhaging. Fortunately this also led to a universal blessing. Grunthos was so put out by the response to this poem that he prepared himself to launch into a reading of "My Favourite Bathroom Gurgles", an epic in twelve volumes.

It was at this point that his small intestine had had a gutful (pun intended), climbed up through Grunthos' neck and throttled his brain.
9. Founder of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Answer: Hurling Frootmig

When Hurling started his first version of the Guide, it was based on the principles of honesty and idealism. The Guide went bust and Hurling Frootmig was a shattered being. He adopted poverty as a way of life and then he chose to lock himself in dark rooms and place his mind in all forms of illegal states. For a while he even toyed with weight lifting.

However, it was a chance encounter with the Holy Lunching Friars of Voondon that made him see the light - that the centre of man's spiritual wellbeing was... lunch! Enlightened, he relaunched the guide but this time his ideals were "honesty and idealism and where you could stuff the both of them".

He set new standards for lunch breaks and, in the process, put the Guide on the path toward its first major success.
10. Computer created by a hyper-intelligent species of beings

Answer: Deep Thought

Anyone who has been a fan of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (1979) will know the significance of the number "42". It proves to be the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything". Deep Thought is the computer that, after seven and a half million years of calculations, delivers it to Loonquawl and Phouchg - two beings who were chosen from birth to receive the answer.

The pair are obviously not impressed with the end result and advise the computer accordingly. Deep Thought is quite miffed and responds "I checked it very thoroughly and that quite definitely is the answer. I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you've never actually known what the question was". With this, Deep Thought offers to build for them a new computer, which turns out to be Earth, to work out the question.

It is five minutes away from delivering that fateful question when it is destroyed to make way for a new space superhighway.
