Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was taking place when the story began?

Answer: Cattle were being loaded onto a train, headed for sale at the market.

According to the story, about 18-20 trains of cattle were being loaded en route to the market.
2. Who was the girl who went shopping with Lorna?

Answer: Ruth Stanton

Lorna took Ruth under her wing a lot.
3. How were Ruth and her family connected to the Calder family?

Answer: Ruth's parents came from Texas with Benteen and Lorna.

I suppose she was like a foster daughter. Ruth's mother had just died,
and Lorna took on a mothering role. Lorna would have loved for Webb and Ruth to marry, but wasn't able to get her wish.
4. Who was hired as the new(and first)sheriff of Blue Moon?

Answer: Mr. Potter

No one ever knew what his first name was! He was called Sheriff Potter even after he retired, and Blue Moon had gotten a new sheriff--but that is another story from another book!
5. What was the slang term for the homesteaders from the east coast, who moved to Blue Moon and surrounding areas?

Answer: Honyockers

6. Who had the land immediately over the east fence from the Calders' range?

Answer: Franz and Helga Kreuger

The Reisners also lived east of the Calders' range, but were on the other side of the Kreugers.
7. Who was the FIRST person in Blue Moon to own an automobile?

Answer: Doyle Petit

Benteen was also among the first to own an automobile, but unfortunately he didn't live long enough to enjoy it!
8. Benteen Calder was concerned Webb didn't want to take responsibilty for running the ranch. How did he motivate Webb to take action, so Benteen could take things a little easier?

Answer: He told Webb he wouldn't automatically inherit the Triple C unless he proved he could run the ranch.

Of course, this kicked Webb into action nicely. He proved himself a worthy son and fought alongside his father for the ranch.
9. Benteen said "a ranch this size has never been sucessfully run from" where?

Answer: The bunkhouse

The main house, refered to as The Homestead, was huge and there was plenty of room for everyone.
10. What was the doctor's name?

Answer: Simon Bardolph

He was a good friend to all. Ruth Stanton was his favorite 'nurse', even though she'd had no medical training. When you are the only doctor for hundreds of miles, you had to use who was available.
11. Doyle Petit had quietly been buying up land from the Drylanders who had given up and moved away. How much land did he have title or claim to?

Answer: Nearly three-quarters of a million acres

He managed to amass nearly as much land as that of the Triple C!
12. During spring round up, when all the new calves were branded, what was the basic principal of cowboy lore that was followed?

Answer: The calf was branded with the same brand as its mother.

The cowboys got a regular production line going too.
13. With Webb running the Triple C, to where did Lorna and Benteen travel?

Answer: Fort Worth, Texas

Aside from visiting with family, they were also buying a bull for the Triple C, but they managed to get away for an extended time. This was when Benteen bought his first car.
14. While they were in Texas, Benteen suffered a heart attack. When the doctor said it was a miracle he was still alive, what were Benteen's words to Lorna?

Answer: "Take me home, Lorna. Don't let me die in Texas"

Montana was the only home for Benteen!
15. What was the last thing Benteen told Webb before he and Lorna got on the train to Texas?

Answer: "It's all yours son..take care of it."

Benteen died doing what he loved-ranching!
16. What disease struck the Drylanders, and ended up killing a lot of them, including Stefan Reisner, Lillian's husband

Answer: Typhoid Fever

They got typhoid fever because their wells were going dry in the drought, and the water got contaminated.
17. Webb and Lilli were married about a month after Stefan died. A year or so later, they had a son. What was his name?

Answer: Chase Benteen Calder

His middle name was chosen in honor of his grandfather. I suspect Grandma and Grandpa would have been crazy about him.
18. After he was born, what vital role did Ruth Stanton Haskell play in little Chase's life?

Answer: She was his wet nurse.

Ruth had had a baby just a couple days before Lilli did. Her son, Buck and Chase were raised almost as brothers, and were best friends for a long time--but, again, that is in ANOTHER book! Ruth figured if she couldn't have Webb, she could have Webb's son. Ruth had been in love with Webb for years.
19. Who killed Doyle Petit?

Answer: He killed himself.

He was broke, and he thought it was the only way out. I guess you could be overextended even back then. Good thing they hadn't invented credit cards yet!
20. Who killed Lilli Calder?

Answer: Franz Kreuger

He was on trial for murder of another man at the time. His entire family, except for his wife and one child, had died in the typhoid epidemic. His acreage was no good. He snapped and killed her when Webb and Lilli were on their way back to the Triple C from his trial for the murder of Hobie Evans.

He had been found unfit to stand trial, but still capable of murder. Webb then killed him in self defense.
