Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character in the play was named The Daughter. Whose daughter is she?

Answer: Indra

She was the daughter of the Indian god Indra. She went to Earth to find out why humans were always complaining and discovered that human life was filled with heartache, disappointment, and struggle.
2. The Officer, the most optimistic of the characters, was in love with an elusive woman. What was her name?

Answer: Victoria

The Officer waited outside the opera house for her to come down, but she never did. He didn't lose hope, though, and never thought that she might be rejecting him.
3. There is a door in the play that is unopened. The Officer works to get the door opened, contacting officials and whatnot, and eventually succeeds. Where is this door located?

Answer: outside the theatre

When they get the door opened, they determine that there is nothing there. They conclude that it's the secret of the world: God created nothing out of nothing.
4. Which character does The Daughter marry?

Answer: The Lawyer

The Lawyer, the pessimist of the characters, married The Daughter. The two of them hoped that in marriage and love they could find the better side of life. That didn't really work out, though.
5. What does The Officer think is the "most nearly perfect of all created things"?

Answer: hairpin

The Officer tells The Lawyer about the hairpin's magic: it is two parallel lines that are actually a single line bent around to parallel itself. The two characters marvel at how the two prongs are simultaneously one hairpin.
6. Before people can get into Fair Haven, they must go through Foul Strand, where they are quarantined. When He and She arrive, how long are they told they must stay in Foul Strand before going on to Fair Haven?

Answer: 40 days and nights

This was one of a number of references to Christ. Another was the crown of thorns for The Officer.
7. The Daughter and The Lawyer encountered some workers on The Riviera. What job did these workers do?

Answer: coal hauling

The Coal Haulers tell The Daughter and The Lawyer that they see themselves as "the foundation of society". If they didn't do the unpleasant work that society depends upon, society itself would not function.
8. Where are The Daughter and The Poet when they watch a ship sink?

Answer: Fingal's Cave

During this scene, The Daughter and The Poet discuss poetry, reality, and dreams.
9. Before the door could be opened, the University President and four Deans had to be consulted. Which of these was NOT one of the Deans?

Answer: Business

The fourth was the Dean of Law. The four Deans debated the nature of truth and knowledge, but in the end the door was opened.
10. What kind of flower blooms from the burning castle at the end of the play?

Answer: Chrysanthemum

This was a strong surrealist element. A chrysanthemum looks like lots of little petals, but they come together to make a single flower. In the same way, the play looks like lots of different characters and places, when perhaps they actually are all parts of the dreamer's mind.
