Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the Raven King?

Answer: A human child brought up in the Fairy

John Uiskglass a.k.a. the Raven King, before he became the king of Northern England, was, as a child, taken by the Fairies and brought up in their land. Nothing whatsoever is known about any familial relations between him and Strange.
2. Which one of the great Romantic poets does Jonathan Strange befriend?

Answer: George Gordon Byron

Even though at the first sight Strange seems to rather dislike Byron, later, in Italy, they become very close friends.
3. In which part of Britain does Mr. Norrell live?

Answer: Yorkshire

Hurtfew Abbey, Mr. Norrell's home, is a few miles away from the city of York - and York was once the capital city of the Raven King.
4. What is the favour that Mr. Norrell does to Prime Minister Pole?

Answer: He resurrects his fiancee, Miss Wintertowne

Miss Wintertowne, soon to become Lady Pole, suffered from prolonged disease and it was the intervention of Mr. Norrell that made the Gentleman with the Thistle-Down Hair bring her back to life. Norrell never cured King George III: it is Jonathan Strange that had met the deranged monarch.
5. "The Nameless Slave" is an alias of which of the characters?

Answer: Stephen Black

"The Nameless Slave" was once a name of John Uiskglass, the Raven King. Later, it is given to Stephen Black, a servant in the house of Sir Walter Pole. Due to this name, he gets, for a moment, a taste of real magical power.
6. What happens to Arabella Strange?

Answer: She gets imprisoned in the Fairy

Everybody, including Jonathan, believes that Arabella Strange is dead. Some even accuse the unfortunate husband of her murder. And yet, it is not her body that is buried in the grave and she is very much alive - even if imprisoned out of her world, in the place that she hates...
7. Who is Strange's superior commander during the war in Spain?

Answer: Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington

It was the Duke of Wellington who commanded the army in Spain and Susanna Clarke follows history here quite close (well, maybe apart from these bits on English magic...:P)
8. Which one of the following is NOT a magician?

Answer: Christopher Drawlight

Godbless and Stokesey were the Aureate, the Golden Age magicians. Strange is obviously a sorcerer, one of those responsible for the revival of English magic. Christopher Drawlight, however, is a snobbish fop and a parasite with no trace of magical talents. "Even his dearest friends would have admitted that he possessed not a single good quality", as the narrator of the novel states.
9. When does Mr. Norrell meet the Gentleman with the Thistle-Down hair for the first time?

Answer: While trying to resurrect the future Lady Pole

Mr. Norrell has never had a fairy servant before the Miss Wintertowne incident. He also did not summon any spirits during or after the visit of Segundus. It is finally the dangerous task of saving Miss Wintertowne's life that makes him first contact the Gentleman.
10. Who is John Childermass?

Answer: A trusted servant of Mr. Norrell

Childermass' intelligence and unwavering loyalty make him a person without whom Norrell would not be able to deal with reality - or with magic, for that matter.
