Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the star baseball player?

Answer: Darren Lemming

Kippy is our narrator, and he describes Darren as being so good, he had a "sixth tool" that no one else could see. Darren was played by Daniel Sunjata in the original Broadway run. Kawabata and Jason are minor characters in the play.
2. What is the nickname of the New York team that they play for?

Answer: Empires

Kippy and other players mention this during the dialogue exchange, particularly in one of Kippy's monologues: "We're the world champion New York Empires! We fix our problems." The Empires are likely based on the New York Yankees.
3. From which Japanese team do they sign Kawabata?

Answer: Fukuoka Daiei Hawks

Kippy mentions this in one of his monologues in Act One. Also mentioned is the fact that Kawabata struggles in the second half of the season.
4. Shane Mungitt claims that he is originally from what state?

Answer: Arkansas

Kippy and Darren probe into Shane's life, and he answers he is originally from Arkansas, then changes it to Tennessee, then Mississippi. He relates his tale of being an orphan, which, surprisingly, he finds funny.
5. In a conversation with Kippy, Darren says that he doesn't want what from people?

Answer: Compassion

After Shane makes a racist and homophobic monologue on TV, Darren finds his stock rise even more, which makes him even angrier. Darren even mentions he is getting offers for commercials for cheap furniture.
6. What is the name of the fan who reads a letter to Darren?

Answer: William R. Danziger

Danziger is a fan from Rahway, NJ. He states that he has no problem with Darren being gay, but he does have a problem with him being a gay baseball player, claiming that Darren's revelation "breaks my heart."
7. Which character is killed by Shane?

Answer: Davey Battle

Davey, an African-American player on an opposing team (which is incredibly mediocre), is beaned in the head by Shane, which kills him. Shane does this in retribution for Darren kissing him in the locker room.
8. What is the name of Darren's financial adviser?

Answer: Mason "Mars" Marzac

Mason Marzac slowly begins to understand the romanticism of baseball, and delivers several monologues about the fairness and cruelties of the game. Darren nicknames him "Mars", because Darren claims he needs one.
9. What does Shane shoot with his shotgun to have him incarcerated?

Answer: Milk bottles

After the final confrontation, Kippy says that the Empires won the World Series, but they didn't care. He also mentions Shane was banned for life, and bought a shotgun. He shot the milk out of every milk bottle within a ten-mile radius, according to Kippy, which led to him being imprisoned.
10. Kippy tells Darren he attended what college?

Answer: Stanford

Kippy says that he was on an academic scholarship, but took up baseball because he liked it too much. Although he wasn't an early star, he ended up making it to the Major Leagues. Kippy says his parents wanted him to be a professor or a priest.
