Lord Saltire was the name of the son of Lord Holdernesse. Lord Holdernesse tried to hush up the scene and it was three days after the incident that Sherlock Holmes was notified. The boy seemed to have jumped out of the window on his own accord.

The house of Holdernesse was located in Hallamshire. It was not far from the Priory School, at which the incident had happened.

Dr. Thoneycroft Huxtable was the founder and principle of the Priory school. He had many children of noble birth under him in his school. The son of Lord Holdernesse is hidden in the Fighting Cock inn. According to Lord Holdernesse, it was the plan of his other son, James Wilder. The kidnapped son, Lord Saltire, is placed under the care of Mrs. Hayes at the inn.
