Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Throughout the series, we meet the heads of various Ajahs, such as Galina Casban, head of the Red Ajah (and a member of the Supreme Council of the Black Ajah). Does the Brown Ajah have an Ajah Head?

Answer: No

While the other six Ajahs have a leader, such as the Green Ajah's Captain-General or the White Ajah's First Reasoner, the Brown Ajah is ruled by a Council, led by the First Chair. The First Chair is among equals, and has slightly more authority than the other Council members. Jesse Bilal is First Chair during the White Tower schism, and is a supporter of Elaida do'Avriny a'Roihan.

She is also confirmed to not be a Black Ajah member, as Alviarin Friedhen, head of the Black Ajah, notes that Galina is the only Ajah Head to be in the Black Ajah.
2. The Salidar rebels send a delegation of sisters to court Rand al'Thor's loyalty, lead by Grey Sister Merana Ambrey. After the Battle of Dumai's Wells, Mazrim Taim orders the delegation to swear fealty to Rand. One of the original Brown delegates is Demira Eriff; who is the other Brown delegate?

Answer: Masuri Sokawa

Masuri is from Arafel, and she and Demira are the Brown sisters in the group sent by the rebel Aes Sedai, who are camping out in Salidar. Verin Mathwin later joins the delegation as well. When the delegation arrives in Caemlyn, Masuri goes to see Rand, along with Merana and Seonid Traighan of the Green Ajah.

After the battle, Rand sends Masuri and Seonid to Ghealdan with Perrin Aybara, and Masuri stays with the Aiel Wise Ones, training under them. Seonid advises Perrin to kill Masema, who has become a fanatical cult leader, though Masuri disagrees with this idea.

She also participates in the rescue of Faile from the Shaido Aiel.
3. Who are the Brown Sitters within the rebel Hall, camped out in Salidar?

Answer: Escaralde, Janya and Takima

Escaralde Hamdey is from Far Madding, and Janya Frende and Takima Deraighdin are both from Andor. Escaralde is elected as a Sitter in the rebel Hall, despite her young age. The young Sitters were specifically chosen as part of a plot by the Ajah Heads in both camps to gain control in the White Tower. Janya and Takima were originally Sitters, but Janya left the White Tower in disgust at Elaida's overthrowing of her predecessor, Siuan Sanche. Takima was not invited to the vote to depose Siuan and was sent to Salidar. She also opposes an alliance with the Black Tower.

Saerin Asnobar, Juilaine Madome and Shevan Gadarin are the Sitters for the Brown in the Tower. After the White Tower is reunited, Saerin stays on as a Sitter, while Shevan and Juilaine step down and Janya and Takima regain their former positions.
4. In 'Winter's Heart', Rand and Nynaeve al'Meara team up to cleanse the taint on saidin near Shadar Logoth, with several Asha'man and Aes Sedai to support them. Unfortunately, the Forsaken also show up, having been ordered by the Dark One to get there immediately. Kumira Dhoran is a Brown sister who is one of the casualties at Shadar Logoth, but which Forsaken kills her?

Answer: Graendal

As the Choeden Kal - the sa'angreal Rand and Nynaeve use to cleanse the taint - give off enormous amounts of saidin and saidar - they are at risk of being spotted and attacked, and several Asha'man and Aes Sedai accompany them to protect them while they do their thing. Kumira Dhoran, a Brown sister from Shienar, is among the Aes Sedai defending Rand and Nynaeve. While patrolling the area with Verin and Shalon din Togara Morning Tide, a Sea Folk Windfinder, she encounters Graendal and the trio link to stop her, but Graendal kills Kumira. Eben Hopwil, a young Asha'man and Warder, is also killed while protecting a group of Aes Sedai from Aran'gar.

Semirhage and Mesaana were among the few Forsaken who did not rush to Shadar Logoth to stop the Big Cleanse. Semirhage had a pretty legitimate excuse - she was in Seanchan murdering the Empress - but Mesaana gets in big trouble with the Dark One for not showing up, and is punished by Shaidar Haran.
5. To which demographic do the three Brown sisters Aiden Shimura, Nyein Kalede and Zemaille Amassa belong?

Answer: Sea Folk

Zemaille was an Accepted during the Aiel War, and Aiden and Nyein lied about their ages when they joined the White Tower. All three sisters work in the Tower Library, no longer wear their Sea Folk jewellery, and are very shy. Zemaille greets Alviarin Friedhen when she returns to the White Tower and Alviarin briefly considers killing her, but decides not to as she notices Aiden and Nyein nearby.

Several Aes Sedai are from the Borderland countries of Saldaea, Kandor, Shienar and Arafel. Some Seanchan do, ironically, end up joining the White Tower late in the series, such as the former sul'dam Bethamin Zeami. An Aiel woman, however, would not be seen dead in the White Tower; the Wise Ones consider that the White Tower regime is far too soft for an Aiel channeller.
6. The Namelle sisters, Adeleas and Vandene, are both Aes Sedai and look so similar, people mistake them for twins. Both of them love research and studying, but only one of the Namelle sisters is a Brown - which one?

Answer: Adeleas

Moiraine visits the Namelle sisters in 'The Great Hunt' to ask them if they have any information on the Seanchan or the Prophecies of the Dragon. Despite being a Green sister, Vandene is as interested in history as Adeleas and tries to answer Moiraine's questions as best she can. She heals Moiraine after a Draghkar attacks her and Lan and Jaem, the Warders, kill it. Both sisters join the Salidar group, and travel with Elayne Trakand and Nynaeve when they take the Bowl of the Winds from Ebou Dar to the Kin's farm. In 'The Path of Daggers', Adeleas is drugged and murdered by Careane Fransi, a Green sister who is actually a Black Ajah member, and Vandene mourns her death. In a confrontation with a group of Black sisters, Vandene kills Careane in revenge for her sister, before being killed by Chesmal Emry.

In the 2021 TV series, Adeleas is Verin's sister.
7. The Brown sisters have a reputation for being dreamy and living in a world of their own, and some of them are downright reclusive. Which Brown sister's identity did the Forsaken Mesaana take on in order to infiltrate the White Tower?

Answer: Danelle

Danelle was a reclusive Brown sister, had no friends in the White Tower and almost never left her room, so it was easy for Mesaana to take her place, as nobody would notice the difference and she looked similar enough to Danelle to get away with it. After torturing Danelle and getting the information she needed at some point before the story, Mesaana kills her.

As Danelle, Mesaana sends for soldiers during Elaida's coup, disguised as builders, and is one of the sisters present when Elaida strips Siuan of her staff and stole. In 'Towers of Midnight', Egwene fights Mesaana in Tel'aran'rhiod when Mesaana and a group of Black sisters disrupt a meeting she is having there. Athough Mesaana momentarily demoralises Egwene by putting an a'dam on her, forcing Egwene to relive her trauma as a damane, Egwene ultimately wins and breaks Mesaana's mind. Danelle is later confirmed to be Mesaana in disguise when she is found babbling incoherently and unable to take care of herself after the battle in Tel'aran'rhiod.
8. Liandrin Guirale is part of a group of thirteen sisters from each Ajah, all of whom are secretly Black Ajah members. Elayne, Egwene and Nynaeve are tasked with tracking them down in 'The Dragon Reborn'. Which two former Brown sisters are part of Liandrin's group?

Answer: Eldrith Jhondar and Marillin Gemalphin

Liandrin notes that while you can take the girl out of the Ajah, you can't take the Ajah out of the girl, as her group continue to act in ways typical for their former Ajahs (like Rianna Andomeran, a former White, having a cold and arrogant manner, or Jeaine Caide, a former Green, wearing low-cut dresses and her fellow former Green Asne Zeramene missing her Warders). Marillin loves cats more than people and is constantly feeding strays while the group are staying in Tanchico. Eldrith, however, hates cats and so is constantly disposing of the strays. Eldrith is from Amadicia, the land of the Whitecloaks, and Marillin is from Andor. Moghedien puts Eldrith in charge of the group after shielding Liandrin.

Eldrith is killed by Doilin Mellar in 'Towers of Midnight', while Marillin fights for the Dark in the Last Battle; it is unknown whether she survives.
9. When Elaida hears of the existence of the Black Tower, she sends fifty sisters there to gentle and execute the Asha'man. However, the Asha'man have other ideas and capture the Aes Sedai, before bonding them. Gabrelle Brawley is a Brown sister among the group of Aes Sedai sent to the White Tower. Which Asha'man bonds her?

Answer: Logain Ablar

Gabrelle is from Murandy, like Elaida, and is surprisingly pragmatic for a Brown sister. She flirts with Logain to try and find out how to escape from the Black Tower, but falls in love with him for real, and Logain becomes quite protective of her. Logain also bonds Toveine Gazal, a Red sister from Saldaea who was put in charge of leading the expedition; the other captive Aes Sedai are angry with her, blaming her for their capture, and beat her up. In 'Knife of Dreams', she helps battle some Trollocs and disposes of the bodies afterwards.

At the Last Battle, Mazrim Taim captures Logain, Toveine and Gabrelle and attempts to Turn them to the Shadow. Toveine is successfully Turned, but Logain and Gabrelle manage to hold out until they are rescued, though Logain is severely traumatised by it. Gabrelle calls him 'Sealbreaker' while encouraging him to break the seals of the Dark One's prison.
10. In 'The Gathering Storm', Verin Mathwin has a meeting with Egwene al'Vere - now the Amyrlin Seat - to give her some important news. She also casually mentions that Egwene is wearing a green dress. What is significant about this statement?

Answer: It is a lie, and proof that Verin is a Black sister

Egwene wonders if Verin has gone bananas, and then realises that Verin has just told a lie, something which an Aes Sedai should be incapable of doing due to the Three Oaths. Verin reveals that she is a member of the Black Ajah, and has been subverting them from within for years; she was caught snooping and given the choice of joining them or death. While a member of the Black Ajah, Verin has spent years compiling a book of names of Black sisters and information about them.

One of the oaths Verin had to take as a Black sister was not to reveal the Dark One's secrets until the hour of her death. In true Aes Sedai fashion, Verin takes the oath literally; she takes a poison that will kill her within an hour, and uses what time she has left to tell Egwene everything and hand the book over to her so she can purge the Black Ajah from the White Tower. Egwene is devastated at Verin's death, saying that her soul was 'purest white', and honours her sacrifice by having several Black sisters - including, to her sadness, Sheriam Bayanar - stilled and executed, although some escape. Tomas, Verin's Warder, goes home to spend what time he has left with his family.
