Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Willie Keith's profession before he joins the Navy?

Answer: Nightclub piano player

Willie's biggest hit was "If You Knew What the Gnu Knew". He also showed talent at improvising ditties based on people's names.
2. How did Captain DeVriess say he'd set his new watch in order to remember the fouled-up crew of the Caine?

Answer: 30 minutes slow

The crew chipped-in for DeVriess' going-away gift, which he at first refused to accept as being against regulations. In true Caine fashion, though, DeVriess found a way around the regs.
3. What was Lieutenant Maryk's profession before he joined the Navy?

Answer: Fisherman

Maryk was the first in his family to graduate college and he joined the Navy as an alternative to a life of backbreaking work as a commercial fisherman.
4. Willie's friend, _____ ends up as Captain of Caine's sister ship, USS Moulton.

Answer: Ed Keggs

Keggs, "ol' Horse Face" according to Roland Keefer, bore up under great pressure from an overbearing Captain, and eventually rose to Captain of the USS Moulton. Keggs' horse face eventually became more of a stallion's.
5. What was the Biblical title of Tom Keefer's novel?

Answer: Multitudes, Multitudes

"Multitudes, multitudes, in the valley of decision". Tom Keefer pined for duty on an aircraft carrier, instead of the backwater of a minesweeper, but when faced with a similar decision as his brother Roland, Tom failed to measure up.
6. Maryk's attorney, Barney Greenwald, was recovering from wounds suffered while he was serving as what?

Answer: Pilot

Lt. Greenwald crashed his fighter plane and suffered extensive burns. By his own admission, he wasn't much of a fighter pilot, but he turned out to be a pretty good defense attorney and person.
7. Who finished the war as Executive Officer of a Naval Depot in Stuber Forks, Iowa?

Answer: Lieutenant Commander Queeg

Willie learned this in a letter from Lt.(jg) Ducely, who enclosed a clipping from a local newspaper with a picture and story about Queeg. Ducely was a plague to Willie during his time aboard Caine, and eventually escaped to his dreamed-of assignment in Navy public relations.
8. Following the trial, attorney Barney Greenwald said someone was the true author of the Caine Mutiny. Who?

Answer: Tom Keefer

Barney Greenwald appeared drunk at the post-trial dinner party put on by Tom Keefer. Barney felt guilty that he had to sink Queeg to save Maryk, since he felt he owed Queeg a favor.
9. After the kamikaze struck the Caine while Keefer was in command, Keefer wondered if he had earned a nickname. What was it?

Answer: Ol' Swandive

Tom Keefer was faced with the same emergency his slovenly brother, Roland, faced on an aircraft carrier - a kamikaze attack. Roland died heroically saving his ship, Keefer jumped overboard and Willie Keith saved the Caine.
10. Who was the last Captain of the Caine?

Answer: Willie Keith

Willie took command after V-J Day, rode out a typhoon, and sailed the Caine home to Bayonne, NJ for decommissioning.
