Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pip notices that all of the following are habits of Mr. Jaggers except one. Which one?

Answer: Smoothing his moustache

Mr. Jaggers performs all three of these habits as ways of intimidating people he considers to be beneath him.
2. Mr. Jaggers says Drummle is like which creature?

Answer: A spider

Mr. Jaggers immediately takes a liking to Bentley Drummle, who is introduced to him by Pip (although Pip doesn't like him very much). Mr. Jaggers calls him "The Spider" and describes him as "the blotchy, sprawly, sulky fellow."
3. Wemmick's father responds very well to a particular gesture. What is it?

Answer: Nodding

Mr. Jaggers's clerk, Wemmick, invites Pip to visit him at home. He introduces Pip to his elderly father (the "aged parent"), who is deaf. Wemmick keeps telling Pip to nod at his father: "Nod away at him, Mr. Pip; that's what he likes. Nod away at him, if you please, like winking!"
4. When Mr. Pocket is upset, he does something that strikes Pip as very strange. What does he do?

Answer: He pulls his hair very hard

Whenever something upsets Mr. Pocket he pulls his hair so hard that he seems like he is trying to lift himself up: "[He] put his two hands into his disturbed hair, and appeared to make an extraordinary effort to lift himself up by it."
5. When Pip encounters Estella for the first time in years, he finds that her appearence is changed. But Estella tells Pip that there is something she doesn't have. What is it?

Answer: A heart

Estella says, "You must know that I have no heart...Oh! I have a heart to be stabbed in or shot in, I have no doubt and, of course, if it ceased to beat I should cease to be. But you know what I mean. I have no softness there, no--sympathy--sentiment--nonsense."
6. What does Herbert call Pip?

Answer: Handel

When Pip first tells his good friend Herbert that his Christian name is "Philip", Herbert says that he doesn't like the name "Philip" because it sounds like a name from a school-book. He suggests "Handel", a name from a piece of music by G. F. Handel about a blacksmith.
7. True or false: Pip meets Herbert for the first time in Volume I.

Answer: True

Herbert is the "pale, young gentleman" that Pip had a fight with one time when he visited Mrs. Havisham.
8. What character does Wopsle portray in his play?

Answer: Hamlet

Wopsle plays Hamlet, although he doesn't do a very good job (although this is very entertaining for most of the audience).
9. What is the name of the Pockets' annoying neighbor?

Answer: Mrs. Coiler

"Mr. and Mrs. Pocket had a toady neighbour; a widow lady of that highly sympathetic nature that she agreed with everybody, blessed everybody, and shed smiles and tears on everybody, according to circumstances."
10. What object does Pip often compare Wemmick's mouth to?

Answer: A mailbox

Although he is friendly and lively at his home in the country, when Wemmick is in London, Pip observes that he becomes mechanical, like an object. He often refers to Wemmick's mouth as looking like a mailbox.
