Answer: Grubbs Grady

Grubbs is the main character of "Lord Loss" - the first published book of the series. This chronicles the circumstances in which he first comes to meet Lord Loss and looks at his family history.

Answer: Bec

Although it wasn't published first, "Bec" - whose main character is of the same name - is chronologically the first book. Whereas Grubbs' books are set in present time and Kernel's set about thirty years earlier, "Bec" is actually set in early Celtic Ireland at the time when it was being converted to Christianity, many centuries before the other books.

Answer: Bill-E Spleen

Bill-E is actually Grubbs' half-brother; they share the same father. For a long time, though, Bill-E believes that he is Grubbs' cousin and that Dervish is his father due to the way Dervish looks after him, as if with a sense of paternal duty. This isn't so much the case as that he's been looking after Bill-E considering his actual father, Dervish's brother, was not around.

The rest are Grubbs' friends from school.

Answer: Raz Warlo

Grubbs hasn't even had the opportunity to meet Raz, who died in the events of "Demon Thief" which is before Grubbs was born. He has met Shark and Sharmila twice - once in a 'dream' in "Slawter", and twice in "Demon Apocalypse". He has also come across Nadia many times - albeit unknowingly - throughout "Slawter", "Blood Beast" and "Demon Apocalypse".

Answer: Artery

When Kernel was lonely and stepped through the portal in his bedroom, he grabbed Artery and transfigured him into a human baby. (This accounts for his unusual fascination with biting.) Kernel then lost his memory of doing so and Artery was stuck in human form. The story of what happened is actually told by Lord Loss as Kernel slowly regains his memory.

Answer: Connla

Connla strikes a deal with Lord Loss in order to protect himself. This involves him ensuring Drust and Bec reach the cave they are headed towards in one piece, but leaves him free to do as he wishes with the others travelling with them. While Bran's stabbing Drust may seem a traitorous act, Bec rebukes this by explaining he doesn't understand what is going on and simply knew that she was going to be killed and didn't want it to happen.

Answer: In "Demon Thief"

Kernel takes Dervish through to the world of the Demonata the first time in "Demon Thief" when he needs to find Beranabus. Shark has been there before, although very briefly, but it is all new to Dervish, who does not even realise the way magic works there and has to be informed.

Answer: Werewolf

The Gradys have a family curse which leads to certain children turning into werewolves, and it has been going on for centuries. The only cure possible seems to be turning to Lord Loss, who plays chess against a challenger for the lives of certain family members. Grubbs' sister Gret turned into a werewolf and perished in this manner, while Bill-E survived when Grubbs and Dervish emerged victorious.

Answer: Blindness

Spine attacks Kernel's eyes and destroys them in "Demon Apocalypse", leaving behind a lot of maggots. Kernel is still enthusiastic to fight, but his inability to navigate and see what is going on hinders him greatly as he is not used to fighting without eyes.

Answer: A movie set

The book title "Slawter" - a pun on 'slaughter' - is actually the title of the film that Davida Haym wants Dervish to give advice on. When he accepts, Dervish, Bill-E and Grubbs go to stay on the movie set for the duration of the film so that Dervish is around when needed and to escape from memories of recent events.
