Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does most of this book take place?

Answer: Stoneybeach

New England is the northeastern corner of the United States. It is bordered by Canada, The Atlantic Ocean, and New York.
2. What did Uncle Jack receive for dragging his wounded friend through no man's land in the war?

Answer: Medal

No mans land is a term used for the area of land between two opposing sides in a battle that is unoccupied. Ranging from several hundred yards to 15 yards in some cases, it is heavily defended by machine guns. It often consists of barbed wire, as well as corpses and wounded soldiers. The area is usually destroyed by the war, leaving little to no cover of any sort.
3. When does Nick have to come and work for Rev. Clampett for supposedly throwing stones at the church windows?

Answer: Sunday afternoons

"'I am telling the truth,' I shouted. 'I am telling you. I didn't do it. That's the truth.'
Rev. Clampett looked at Uncle Jack. Uncle Jack shrugged. 'He'll have to work it off,' he said. 'He'll come up on Sunday afternoons until it's worked off.'
Rev. Clampett nodded. 'I'm sorry, Nick. It would be a lot better for everybody if you told us what this was all about.'"
4. What did Gypsy's Pa hit her with when he came home drunk one night?

Answer: A skillet

"I went out the kitchen door into the barnyard. The chickens hadn't been housed up yet and were still clucking around the barnyard waiting for a fox to get them. 'Where's Gypsy, you fools?' She must have heard me, for she came out of the shadows of the barn. In the twilight I couldn't see her too well, but I could see well enough to know she was crying. Her hands were balled up by her sides, and one of her cheeks was red and swelled up. 'Someday I'm going to kill him, I swear I will.'
'What'd he hit you with?'
'The skillet,' she said. She gasped out a big sob. 'I'll kill him, I swear it. He was raging around the house because there wasn't no supper for him. We already ate. How was we supposed to know he was coming home? He ain't been home for three days. He shouted at Ma to fry him up some ham and potatoes. She told him we didn't have no ham. He snatched down the skillet and took a swing at her, but being drunk he missed and fell down. She ran off to Old Man Sneakers's to borrow a piece of ham. Falling down like that made him madder than ever. He shouted at me to fry some potatoes. I said I couldn't, being as he had the skillet. He shouted, I'll learn you to answer back, and before I could duck, he whanged me with the skillet.' She snapped her fists by her sides again. 'I'm going to kill him someday.'"
5. According to Gypsy, how much can you make a week at the paper mill?

Answer: $25.00

Modern paper machines are huge and can be 500 feet long, can produce a sheet 400 inches wide, and can operate at speeds of over 60 miles per hour.
6. Which fist did Nick's look-alike shake at him?

Answer: Left

Nick believes that since Jared took Nick's reflection they behave the opposite of each other. Say Nick had a shirt that buttoned up on the left side. This would cause Jared's shirt to button up on the right side because that is the way his reflection would look in a mirror. Most shake with their right arm, so in the mirror your reflection would shake with its left arm.
7. What did Nick's look-alike call Miss Bell before she ran out of Uncle Jack's house?

Answer: Fatso

"The other me began to dance. 'I'll tell you what's finished,' he said. 'I'm finished coming around here like you owned the place, trying to get Jack to marry you.'
Miss Bell gasped, and Uncle Jack's mouth dropped open. 'Nick, I don't believe what I heard,' he said.
Miss Bell cried, 'Believe it, Jack. I told you all along the boy's to the bad.'
I swung open the door. Already Miss Bell had turned away and was pushing past the other me out of the kitchen toward the front door. Then she was gone. The other me went on dancing. 'Out you go, fatso,' he shouted."
8. What did Uncle Jack have put on Jared Solter's grave?

Answer: Died Among Strangers

Here are some amusing epitaphs:

-I told you I was sick!

-Here lies the body
of Jonathan Blake
Stepped on the gas
Instead of the brake.

-Here lays Butch,
We planted him raw.
He was quick on the trigger,
But slow on the draw.

-Here lies the body of our Anna
Done to death by a banana
It wasn't the fruit that laid her low
But the skin of the thing that made her go.

-Here lies Lester Moore.
Four slugs
From a forty-four.
No Les
No More.

-Bill Blake
Was hanged by mistake.

-Here lies Robert Trollope
Who made yon stones roll up.
When death took his soul up
His body filled this hole up.

10. Who said "Glory be, there was two of them after all."?

Answer: Frank Saunders

"The mob veered away from me to run to the lake. They stood there, waiting for him to come up. But I knew he wouldn't, and I waited until they realized it, too.
Then I heard Frank Saunders say, 'Glory be, there was two of them after all.'"
