Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hazel lends Augustus her copy of "An Imperial Affliction" written by Peter Van Houten, a fictional author. Which book does Augustus lend to Hazel in return?

Answer: The Price of Dawn

It is from "An Imperial Affliction" that "The Fault in Our Stars" takes its epigraph.

Hazel's review of "The Price of Dawn" is that there are too many bodies and not enough adjectives, though she claims to find the book's protagonist, Staff Sergeant Max Mayhem, vaguely likeable, despite his killing over one hundred individuals.

Gus lends Hazel the book after they watch a film together after meeting at the Cancer Support Group. He writes his phone number on the title page.

"Midnight Dawns" and "Requiem for Mayhem" are the first two sequels to "The Price of Dawn". The Dutch Tulip Man is a character in "An Imperial Affliction".
2. Augustus Waters dated a girl prior to the beginning of the novel. He and Hazel discuss her while talking about their first kisses. What was her name?

Answer: Caroline

Caroline Mathers died of a brain tumour while she was still dating Gus. This tumour, according to Gus, altered her personality and made her fairly unlikeable as her life reached its conclusion.

Kaitlyn is Hazel's friend, Monica is Isaac's ex-girlfriend, and Anna is Peter Van Houten's daughter.
3. What is the name of Peter Van Houten's assistant?

Answer: Lidewij Vligenthart

Lidewij quits her job after realising how horrible Van Houten can be. She takes Hazel and Gus to the Anne Frank house. The entire trip to Amsterdam is because she passed Hazel and Gus's emails on to the alcoholic author.
4. In which type of music is Peter Van Houten interested?

Answer: Swedish hip-hop

In one of his YouTube videos, author John Green stated that he listened to a lot of Swedish hip-hop while writing scenes featuring the fictional author. Much of Van Houten's philosophy on literature reflects Green's own views, including the idea that books belong to their readers; that is, an author holds no additional information about the universe of the story beyond what is written in the text.

Van Houten mentions his love for Swedish hip-hop when Hazel tries to find out what becomes of the characters in "An Imperial Affliction" after the novel ends. Hazel struggles to understand how Van Houten doesn't know what happens to his characters.
5. Hazel is a vegetarian.

Answer: True

Hazel mentions this during her first visit to the Waters' house. She states that she "want[s] to minimise the number of deaths [she] is responsible for".

When the lovebirds have dinner together in Amsterdam, Augustus tells the waiter that the chef's choice would be wonderful, though Hazel is a vegetarian. Hazel is impressed, on account of having mentioned that fact only once to him, on the day they met.
6. Which of these does Augustus not use as a hint that he is taking Hazel to Amsterdam?

Answer: Orange soda

In fact, the pair drink orange juice. Orange juice is not inherently Dutch, but the colour orange is the national colour of The Netherlands.
The Indiana Pacers jersey bears the name and number of Rik Smits, a Dutch basketball player.
7. Dr Maria was initially opposed to the Amsterdam trip.

Answer: False

When Hazel first asked at the Cancer Team Meeting, Dr Simons laughed, but Dr Maria said "why not?", arguing that they have oxygen on planes. She stated that it would increase some risks, but ultimately, it's Hazel's life.
8. While waiting for an ambulance for Augustus, Hazel recites a poem from memory for him. Who is the poet?

Answer: William Carlos Williams

The poem is called "The Red Wheelbarrow".
Augustus has an infected G-tube. This scene is one of the most heart wrenching, tear-inducing scenes of the entire book. Augustus is at rock bottom, and asks the universe to just let him die so he doesn't have to suffer any more.
9. Where does Augustus tell Hazel that he "lit up like a Christmas tree"?

Answer: In her hotel room

Only then does Hazel realise that she's in love with a fellow grenade, and worrying about being a grenade is foolish. She declares the world unfair and hugs Augustus tightly.
She describes the carpet of her hotel room as being older than Augustus will ever be.
10. Though it was mostly well-received by critics, there were a few who criticised the pretentious speech of Augustus Waters. Which of these lines of arguable pretentiousness was not attributed to Gus?

Answer: I fear your faith has been misplaced-but then, faith usually is

This line is from Van Houten's first correspondence with Hazel. Hazel wanted to find out what happened after the end of "An Imperial Affliction", Van Houten's book, but, much like John Green himself, Van Houten rejects the notion that authors hold any insight into what happens in a book's universe outside what is printed in the text.
