1. At the very beginning of the book, General Feversham and his guests are celebrating the anniversary of their attack upon the Redan. What else is important about this date?

Answer: It is Harry Feversham's birthday

It is Harry's fourteenth birthday, and a night that changes his life. After hearing stories about war from several of General Feversham's guests, Harry begins to fear cowardice if he should ever be sent to war, which is why he resigns from the army thirteen years later.
2. Throughout the novel, Lieutenant Sutch takes an interest in, and a liking to Harry. Why?

Answer: Lieutenant Sutch was a good friend of Harry's mother

Since General Feversham is unable to understand his son, Lieutenant Sutch tries to as he knew that Harry's mother would.
3. Whose idea is it to send Harry the feathers?

Answer: Trench

Harry was sent a telegram by Castleton telling him that his regiment was going into service in Egypt. Instead of telling Trench like he was supposed to, Harry burns the telegram in the fire. However, Trench becomes suspicious and pays a visit to Castleton, where he finds out the truth. For Harry, that's when things start going downhill.
4. What kind of feather does Ethne give to Harry?

Answer: An ostrich feather

Trench, Castleton, and Willoughby all send Harry heron feathers. However, Ethne breaks off an ostrich feather from her fan and gives it to him during the dance at Lennon House, meaning that she too thinks him a coward.

Answer: His photograph

Ethne gives Harry back her engagement ring right before she gives him the fourth feather. The next day she burns all of the letters he has written her, and is going to keep the penknife, but changes her mind and keeps his photograph instead.

As I mentioned earlier, Lieutenant Sutch made an effort to understand Harry and his reasons for not wanting to go to war. He was the only person Harry felt he could trust with his plans.

Answer: The zither

Jack Durrance sees him and tries to talk to him, but Harry refuses.

After Jack Durrance goes blind, he gets Ethne to play him this song because it lets him know how she is feeling. It is also the song that Harry plays on his zither in Wadi Halfa.

Answer: Willoughby

After Harry risks his life to recover some letters, Willoughby takes back his feather.
10. When Willoughby visited Ethne, why did she not want him to see Jack?

Answer: She didn't want Jack to know about the feathers

Ethne tried to keep the four feathers a secret from Jack. However, even though Jack is blind, secrets are not easily kept from him.

Mrs. Adair had been forced in to marriage at a very young age, and had led a very dull life while her husband was alive. After her husband died she confessed to Jack that she was in love with him, but Jack doesn't return her affections.

Answer: She was all that Jack had left, and she didn't want his life to be spoilt because of her

Ethne made a promise to herself that two lives should not be spoilt because of her. She felt that she had already ruined Harry's life, so she was determind not to do the same thing to Jack.

Answer: three

He had been there for three years before Harry came to help him escape, although I don't know how he managed to survive.

As a reward Harry is allowed to sleep outside, and several nights later Trench is allowed to join him.

As usual, Lieutenant Sutch is there to help Harry out! Jack also plays a part in this plan. It is Jack's idea for Sutch to go to Suakin and organize a rescue. And it is Jack who pays for everything.
16. Why is Harry and Trench's escape from Omdurman delayed?

Answer: All of these reasons

When Harry first arrives at the prison, he is delirious and is unable to go anywhere. He recovers before too long, but right before the day they plan to escape Trench becomes sick, so the escape is delayed. Abou, who plays a necessary role in Harry's plan, has to leave, but says he will come back in six months. However, he is wounded, which delays the escape again.
17. When Harry sees Ethne again in the church at Glenalla, how long has it been since he has seen her last?

Answer: six years

It took Harry six years in the desert to regain his honour.
18. While at the church, why does Ethne say that she and Harry can never have another meeting in their lifetime?

Answer: She doesn't want Jack to suspect her true feelings for Harry

Ethne is afraid that if they are together in Jack's presence he will know that she is still in love with Harry. Since Jack became blind, he is very quick to notice things like that. However, Ethne has no doubt that she and Harry will see each other in the afterwards.
19. Here's an easy one. Do Harry and Ethne get together by the end of the book? Yes or no?

Answer: yes

Jack breaks his engagement with Ethne, as he knows it is the right and unselfish thing to do. This leaves Ethne and Harry free to be together.
20. At the end of the novel, what is Harry working on?

Answer: Writing a book

Ethne said in her letter to General Feversham that Harry was on his sixth chapter of his history of the war. I was glad to know that things worked out for Harry and Ethne, Harry sure deserved it after all that he went through!
