Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The three main characters of the series first meet in the streets of Easton, under odd circumstances. Grunthor and the Brother are running from an ancient evil while Rhapsody is running from an obnoxious ex-customer. The two strange companions "rescue" her and take her on a long journey through a most unusual place, inside of the roots of an ancient tree, worshiped by the race of the Lirin. What is this tree called?

Answer: Sagia

Sagia is a tree of immense size; so big that Rhapsody, Achmed, and Grunthor could stand on different sides of the tree and they still would not be able to see one another. It's also referred to as the Oak of Deep Roots; an apt name, they later find out when crawling along in the Earth for centuries.
2. There were many dangers on their travels: vermin, cave-ins, not to mention a shortage of food. Another (more ancient) danger lie beneath the Earth's layers, in a deep sleep. Achmed had found its heart beat, due to the physiology change that resulted from the name that Rhapsody accidentally renamed him upon their meeting. What was this creature?

Answer: A primal wyrm

Because she renamed him Achmed the Snake, Achmed was able to discern the slow heart beat of the primal wyrm. Its size was unsurpassed by anything, even Sagia's roots. Most of its body mass made up the mass of the Earth and thus its awakening would herald the end of all life on Earth.
3. During their travels, Grunthor teaches Rhapsody the fine art of using the sword. This skill was a big help in defending one another from the vermin that infested the root. In return, she taught Grunthor how to read, write, and what other skill?

Answer: How to write/read music

They had endless time along the root, which was plenty to turn Rhapsody into a skilled swordswoman. They had been with each other so long that fighting off the vermin had become routine and each settled into their position as soon as the vermin were in sight.
4. When Rhapsody enters Llauron's home, his hospitality includes a bath which she had not had in centuries. Being a Namer and an amateur healer/herbalist, Rhapsody immediately recognizes the herbs that were added to give off a lovely scent. Which were they?

Answer: Fennel and Lemon Verbena

When asked by Llauron if she recognized the herbs used, she admits to herself that she did recognize all of the above but did not want to voice this to Llauron for fear of revealing too much information about herself. However, as soon as she stands over the bathtub, she recognizes the scents of Fennel and Lemon Verbena, making it the right choice for this question.
5. The Filidic religion is one that worships the All-God through the respect and care of nature. Their leader, Llauron the Invoker, explains the process through which a new Invoker is chosen. He said the faith chose the laws of Tanistry, in which a person is selected by the order, particularly someone who is healthy so that they might survive the leader. Why did Llauron choose this law instead of maintaining the older rituals?

Answer: Because a Tanist is sworn to celibacy, therefore taking away the problems of family lineage and who is to succeed to Invoker

The older rituals usually involved fights to the death, a brutal practice Llauron did not want passed on. He admits to Rhapsody that in the meeting with the Circle of Elders, Khaddyr may be replaced by Gavin because he is not likely to survive Llauron.
6. Achmed, Rhapsody, and Grunthor had a difficult time trying to figure out how far out of time they were when they first left the Root. One way to find out was to find out how many Kings Serendair had after they had left. Who was about to ascend the throne before they fled the Island?

Answer: Trinian

The three had no idea just how far ahead in history they were. They did not find out until their visit to Stephen Navarne's Cymrian Museum.
7. The struggle for the populace of Serendair to leave the Island was a long one wrought with many difficulties. Traveling to the new land was the most difficult and most deadly. The First Fleet of ships leaving Serendair were devastated by a hurricane, but the Second Fleet managed to avoid major damage. Unfortunately, they were blown off course and ending up landing where?

Answer: Manosse

MacQuieth lead the Second Fleet and made the decision to land in Manosse rather than risking finding the path to the land Merithyn had discovered.
8. On the way to Navarne, Rhapsody ran into a famous General from the Great Cymrian war. He almost ran over her when she dove in front of his charging horse to scatter children out of his path. Who was it?

Answer: Anborn

One of the small boys that Rhapsody rescued from the General and his warhorse stayed by to witness the whole thing. His name was Robin, also the name of one of Rhapsody's brothers and imparted Anborn's name to Rhapsody, since the famous warrior wasn't willing to tell her himself.
9. Tref-Y-Gwartheg, a farm village close to the Great White Tree, as Rhapsody noticed, translates into "Old Cymrian" as what?

Answer: Cattletown

Rhapsody stumbled into Khaddyr in this village. This was also the village close to the meeting spot where Achmed and Grunthor were to meet Rhapsody in two months after learning as much as they could about the new land.
10. Lord Stephen of Navarne is a wealth of knowledge on the Cymrians and even has a museum devoted to their accomplishments on his lands. While visiting, the three learned the complex way in which it was decided the Cymrians would address each other, rather than the confusion of which fleet they would be associated with or which race they were. Which of these is the "simple system" that Stephen said they agreed upon?

Answer: The person's first name is stated, then the next two ancestors of the same gender, and ending with the First Generationer they had descended from

Stephen's example was Lord Gylliam ap Rendlar ap Evander tuatha Gwylliam, his first name, father then grandfather's name, and he himself had been a First Generationer. All people who came from Serendair had names such as this.
