Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Ray Garraty's number?

Answer: 47

12 was Fenter, 7 was Curley, 94 was Wayne, and, of course, Ray was 47. The numbers were given in alphabetical order by last name. Other big numbers in the Walk were: Abraham - 2, Baker - 3, Barkovitch - 5, McVries - 61, and
Olsen - 70.
2. Who was the first Long Walker that Ray befriended?

Answer: McVries

Ray and Pete McVries introduced themselves to each other before the Walk began. Their friendship remained until The Long Walk ended.
3. How many Walkers and backups were chosen each year?

Answer: 100 walkers & 100 backups

Ray was a Prime Walker from the beginning. His name was drawn 73rd out of the drum on the TV special by the major. He refused to back out, even though everyone around him begged him to. McVries was not a Prime Walker and only found out that he had been made Prime four days before the Walk started. Twelve Prime Walkers backed out before the Walk began.
4. Who was the first Walker to "buy his ticket?"

Answer: Curley

Curley went down due to a charley horse (painful cramp) in his leg, which at first seemed to loosen. However, several minutes later, a scream was heard. The cramp in Curley's leg had resurged painfully, earning him a ticket by four rifles.
5. Who were the "Three Musketeers?"

Answer: Ray, McVries, Baker

Raymond Garraty, Peter McVries, and Arthur Baker comprised the original group of friends that had several others join later. These three introduced themselves to each other before the Walk began and talked quite a bit over the course of the Walk, before two of them "bought a ticket" at the end of the Walk.
6. What did Stebbins say that he was?

Answer: The rabbit

Stebbins made the comparison that he was the rabbit at a greyhound race, making all the dogs try harder. The warhorse is what the Major was nicknamed. Stebbins was thought to be the best Walker right up until the end. And the Energizer Bunny keeps going and going... Unfortunately, Stebbins did not.
7. Who planned to write a book about the Long Walk if he won it?

Answer: Harkness

Harkness said that he could make a fortune giving an insider's view on the Walk. He asked nearly every other Walker questions about himself to add to the book. However, Harkness had a cramp in his foot that gained him three warnings and soon after he bought his ticket.
8. Whose wife did the remaining Walkers plan to help if they won?

Answer: Scramm

Scramm became sick with pneumonia and sat down in the road with one of the Hopi Walkers, Mike. Several of the other Walkers made a promise to help out Scramm's wife, Cathy, if any of them won. Vegas odds had Scramm the favorite to win and he may have done it too, if not for the fact that he had gotten sick.
9. Who was the last Long Walker to buy a ticket?

Answer: Stebbins

Baker went, then McVries, and finally Stebbins, allowing Ray to win the Walk. Stebbins looked to be strong until the very end, when he simply laid down and died, possibly from a brain aneurysm. The heartless soldiers shot him anyway.
10. What did Ray finally find the strength to do?

Answer: Run

Ray could see the dark figure ahead of him and had to continue after it. There are several theories of who the figure is, such as the recurring Stephen King villain, Randall Flagg, or the soul of one of the Walkers that had bought on minutes before. Another - and my favorite - is that it was Ray's hope, which had been dwindling since Freeport. "And when the hand touched his shoulder again, he somehow found the strength to run."
