Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Noah purchased a plantation-style house just after the war ended. Where was it located?

Answer: New Bern

The house was built in 1772 and was one of the largest and oldest houses in New Bern. Noah spent eleven months restoring the house to its former glory and this made a reporter from Raleigh do an article on it. When Noah fell in love with Allie as a teenager, he had promised her that one day he was going to own it and fix it up.
2. Which of the following was Noah's pet?

Answer: A dog

After the war, when Noah moved to New Bern, he shared the house with Clem (short for Clementine), a hound dog. Clem was hit by a car and since then she limped. Her owner didn't want her anymore so when the vet asked Noah about Clem, he agreed to have her.
3. Which book of poetry did Noah read most frequently?

Answer: Leaves of Grass

As a child Noah stuttered when he spoke. His father asked him to read poetry aloud and this helped him get over his stutter. Since then Noah had been reading poetry. However, he read 'Leaves of Grass' by Walt Whitman most frequently, and even carried it to war with him.
4. How did young Allie come to know about Noah's whereabouts?

Answer: She read an article about him in the local newspaper.

Allie had not met Noah for 14 long years. She was engaged to Lon Hammond and whilst reading the paper she chanced upon an article with a picture of Noah and the house he had restored in New Bern. Memories of the past came rushing back to her and she decided to go up to New Bern and meet Noah and tell him in person that she was engaged and to be married soon.
5. Noah and Allie once shared a summer romance. How long after that did they meet again?

Answer: 14 years

Allie had come to New Bern with her parents for the summer in 1932. It was then that she met Noah, when they were just teenagers and fell in love. When the summer ended, Allie went back with her parents but neither Allie nor Noah could forget that summer romance. When Allie saw Noah's picture in the local newspaper, she went to meet him after a gap of 14 years.
6. What was Allie's fiancé's profession?

Answer: Lawyer

Allie's fiancé, Lon Hammond, belonged to a very rich family. He was a very successful lawyer. One of the reasons for success was that work was his first priority. Everything else, including Allie, came later.
7. Who warned Allie that her fiancé had learned about her feelings for Noah and was on his way to confront her?

Answer: Her mother

When Allie saw Noah's picture in the local newspaper, her mother had noted her erratic behavior. Allie went to visit Noah, but told everyone including her mom, that she was going shopping near the coast. That's when Allie's mother suspected that she had gone to meet Noah. About the same time, Lon figured out Allie's intentions of coming to the coast.

He was on his way to New Bern and Allie's mother wanted to inform and warn her daughter about it.
8. What disease did Allie suffer from when she got old?

Answer: Alzheimer's disease

When Allie got old she suffered from Alzheimer's disease. It is an incurable degenerative brain disorder which affects the memory and personality of an individual. As a result of the disease, most of the time Allie didn't recognize Noah, her children, or even herself. However, sometimes, just after Noah read the story of their life to her, her condition improved for a short span of time.
9. What gift did young Allie give Noah, just before the end of their summer romance?

Answer: A painting

Allie was a very talented artist. She had gifted Noah a painting before she left during their summer romance. Noah had hung the painting above the fireplace in the living room of his New Bern home. However, her parents didn't approve of a career in painting and hence she stopped painting after she graduated.
10. When Allie became unwell, where did Noah and Allie move to?

Answer: Creekside Extended Care Facility

Allie was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and her condition began to deteriorate over time. Allie decided to come to Creekside because she knew that Noah wouldn't be able to take care of her alone, especially since he was also growing old. She wanted to make things easier for him and decided it was best to come to the Creekside Extended Care Facility, which was close to their home.
