Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Arthurian character is the book centered on?

Answer: Elaine of Ascolat

Although all of these characters play significant parts in the story, the book is told through the eyes of Elaine, or the Lady of Shalott. Most stories make Elaine a damsel in distress, who dies of her unrequited love for Lancelot. Personally, I prefer this book's ending.
2. Who is Elaine in love with at the beginning of the book?

Answer: Lancelot

Elaine first believes she is in love with Lancelot. Tirry is her brother, so that is obviously incorrect. She was never in love with Arthur.
3. What member of Elaine's family is dead?

Answer: Her mother

Her mother was killed by invading Picts. Elaine's father and eldest brother are still alive, and she never had a younger sister.
4. How did Aurelius, the former dux bellorum of Britain, die?

Answer: Poisoned

Aurelius was poisoned by the Saxons. Arthur assumed the position of dux bellorum after, to much unhappiness for some.
5. Who is Gwynivere's father, the man whom Lancelot was sent to retrieve?

Answer: Lodengrance

Lodengrance was one of the men who went away after the death of Aurelius. Barnard is Elaine's father. Gawain is one of the soldiers at camp, and Aurelius is, of course, the dead dux bellorum.
6. Elaine works with herbs to make medicines for the soldiers.

Answer: True

Elaine learned how to make medicines and poultices from plants from Arthur's older sister, Morgan. Morgan is the only alive female that Elaine knows at the beginning of the book.
7. Who followed Elaine when she went after the soldiers?

Answer: Gwynivere

Gwynivere did not let Elaine know she was following until the Saxons captured them. She fought to save Elaine. Unfortunately, it didn't work.
8. How did Gwynivere save her and Elaine's lives when they were being captured by Saxons?

Answer: She told them that she was Arthur's wife

Gwynivere told them that she was Arthur's wife, which was true. She said that Arthur would pay to get them back. She also claimed that Elaine was Arthur's sister.
9. Elaine ends up falling in love with Tristan.

Answer: True

In the very end of the book, Elaine tells Tristan that she thinks she has always loved him. Nothing is said on what happens between them after the last chapter, but according to their conversation in that last chapter, one could come to the conclusion that they plan to spend their lives together.
10. In the Author's note, Lisa Ann Sandell talks of the history of Arthurian legends. In which centuries does she say that Arthur would have lived?

Answer: Fifth or sixth century A,D,

The book says that he most likely would have lived in the late 5th or early 6th century, if indeed he lived at all. I always thought it would have been in the twelfth century, but it turns out that's just when "Le Morte d'Arthur" by Sir Thomas Mallory was written.
