Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the Maiden's Knight?

Answer: Sir Gawain

Gawain is made the Maiden's Knight towards the end of book one by Ganscotter the enchanter after completing his various quests. Gareth and Gaheris are Gawain's brothers but neither of them have much of a part until the third book. Kai is King Arthur's foster brother and seneschal.
2. Who is Lady Eileen's uncle?

Answer: The Marquis of Alva

The Marquis of Alva is Eileen's uncle. She went to live with him after her parents died. He is an evil tyrant who enjoys killing other knights. He attempted to kill Gawain but Eileen and Terence saved him. Gawain almost killed the Marquis but decided not to because the Marquis was unwell and it would be unchivalrous to kill a man on the chamber pot.

Although later, the Marquis' own knights turn on him and kill him themselves.
3. Who really is Roger the dwarf?

Answer: Sir Gaheris

Gaheris is turned into a dwarf by an enchantress. He was in a hurry somewhere and when this enchantress turned up asking to be lead to Camelot he told her he couldn't but could give her directions. She fluttered her eyelashes at him so he asked if she was all right and told her he once had a horse with diseased eyes like hers.

This woman obviously had no sense of humour and turned him into a dwarf.
4. Who is Parsifal's page?

Answer: Piers (or Pierre)

Piers or Pierre as he prefers to be known is the eleven-year-old hero of the fourth book. He meets Parsifal, a young knight, and becomes his page. He realises that although Parsifal is a fantastic fighter and brilliant knight his manners are not so good. Pierre then attempts to teach Parsifal the skills of knightly graces, usually without much success.
5. What famous Arthurian love story is featured in the fifth book "The Ballad of Sir Dinadan"?

Answer: Tristram and Iseult

Tristram is Dinadan's famous older brother. His equally famous love affair with Iseult, King Mark's wife, is featured in this story alongside the main plot. Lancelot's affair with Guinevere is featured in the second book and so far Merlin's hasn't been mentioned. Gareth and Lyonesse are married at the end of the third book, they aren't exactly a famous couple but have a mention in tales here and there.
6. Robin is known by several different names; which of these is one of them?

Answer: Puck

Robin is the little faery who is a kind of messenger between worlds. He is a bit of a trickster but not actually evil. He is known by loads of different names including Puck, Robin and Robin Goodfellow.
7. Who is the dung-cart knight?

Answer: Sir Lancelot

Sir Lancelot is referred to in the sixth book as the dung-cart knight because when he set off on this particular quest he didn't ride a horse but instead got a lift on a dung-cart. This is the first quest Lancelot has been on since he lost a joust years ago.

When he lost that joust (to the mysterious Sir Wozzel) he was no longer considered the greatest knight in all England so he quit being a knight and became a bit of a hermit. He was never seen again in King Arthur's Court and didn't fight again until this book.

In this book Lancelot is a much better character than in the other book where he was a bit of a twit but his break from Court seemed to make a better person of him. He made a much better knight when he was no longer trying to be one.
8. Which of these is a job Rhience has not done?

Answer: Soldier

Rhience is a really interesting character, in his long and colourful career he has done jobs from nearly every corner of the spectrum. Personally I think he's best as a jester although he makes a good knight too. He wasn't much of a monk though, because he kept laughing during sermons!
9. What is the name of Sir Gawain's horse?

Answer: Guingalet

Guingalet is an aughisky, a water horse from Orkney. He's fierce and it's likely he'd bite their arm off if anyone but Gawain (and sometimes including Gawain) tried to mount him.
10. There are many different versions of the Arthurian legends; who was the author of the stories that the "Squires Tales" are mainly based on?

Answer: Sir Thomas Malory

Gerald Morris based most of the "Squire's Tales" on "Le Morte D'Arthur" written by Sir Thomas Malory. "Le Morte D'Arthur" means the death of Arthur and was originally written in French.
