Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the main character in the book?

Answer: Sir Kenneth

It is interesting to note that "Kenneth" in Gaelic means "good-looking". I have always imagined that he would be the typical handsome knight.
2. From what country does the main character in the book hail?

Answer: Scotland

He came from Scotland with a small band of followers in order to fight in the Crusade with King Richard.
3. For what reason does our hero leave his post guarding the banner of England?

Answer: He was told that Edith wanted to see him.

As it says in the book, "'Tis woman that seduces all mankind." In his defense, though, it was the woman he loved and adored. Who wouldn't have gone?
4. Who convinces King Richard to not kill our poor, unfortunate knight after he failed to protect England's banner?

Answer: El Hakim

In truth, all of these people pleaded with the king for Sir Kenneth's life. El Hakim, the doctor, was the one who convinced Richard to let Sir Kenneth leave with his life.
5. The knight disguised himself as a Nubian slave in order to find the thief of England's banner.

Answer: True

It was very clever of him, and quite succesful, too. He was able to discover the culprit.
6. Conrad, Marquis of Montserrat was the thief of England's banner.

Answer: True

Sir Kenneth's hound, Roswal, had seen the thief the night of the attack and was used to identify the bad guy.
7. How was Conrad's innocence or guilt to be determined?

Answer: He would have to fight another knight.

It was decided that if Conrad won, he was innocent. If he lost, however, he was guilty as charged.
8. Who had Saladin disguised himself as in the book?

Answer: Both El Hakim and Ilderim

Saladin used his disguises to wander about freely in order to be his own spy. He used his doctor disguise in a friendly way to heal King Richard.
9. Who did Edith really end up marrying?

Answer: David, Earl of Huntingdon

Although Sir Kenneth and David, Earl of Huntingdon are technically the same person, Sir Kenneth is not an actual person. The name was just a cover-up so David (the Prince of Scotland, by the way) could join Richard on the Crusade without anyone trying to stop him.

After the defeat of Conrad, Richard revealed Kenneth's true identity to everyone and David was finally allowed to marry his love, Edith.
10. What was "the talisman" in the book?

Answer: A healing medicine.

The talisman was used several times to heal people throughout the book. Saladin gave the talisman to David and Edith as a wedding gift.
