Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In chapter 1, Clay Jensen received a series of cassette tapes made by his classmate Hannah Baker, but he had no idea what was on them. Why didn't Clay ask Hannah about them?

Answer: She was dead

Hannah killed herself with an overdose of pills about two weeks before the tapes came to Clay. A couple of days before her death, she recorded the tapes, and she left instructions that the tapes were to be distributed to certain people in the order that they appear. According to her instructions, if someone failed to pass the tapes along, a second copy of the tapes would be made public.
2. Hannah Baker's tapes were intended to go to 13 people, and they listed 13 reasons for her actions. Why did Clay find the number of people and the number of reasons strange?

Answer: A group of 13 is called a "baker's dozen"

On the very first page, Clay noted that Hannah Baker's list was a "baker's dozen", and then felt disgusted with himself for noticing it. In England about 900 years ago, a baker who gave a customer less than he ordered might be severely punished, so bakers started giving 13 items when a customer ordered a dozen (12 items), to avoid the risk of being punished for a counting mistake.

In fact, there were only 12 different names on the list, as Justin's name appears twice.
3. Although Clay and Hannah were not close friends, they had worked together the previous summer. Where?

Answer: movie theater

Clay and Hannah had both worked at the local Crestmont movie theater over that summer. He sold tickets in the box office, and she worked at the concession stand.
4. Which of the following was not one of the people on Hannah Baker's list?

Answer: Skye Miller

Skye Miller was not on the list, and Hannah did not mention her on the tapes. The other three were each on the list for specific reasons. Justin Foley was Hannah's "first kiss" and started her bad reputation by lying about her. Ryan Shaver stole one of Hannah's poems and published it in the school poetry magazine, without naming her as the author. Mr. Porter was Hannah's guidance counselor, who advised her to move on with her life when she asked him for help.
5. When Clay filled out the "Oh My Dollar Valentine" form for the cheerleaders' Valentine's Day fundraiser, he filled it out as if he were someone else. Whose personality did Clay adopt?

Answer: Holden Caulfield

Clay treated the form as a joke and filled it out as if he were depressed loner Holden Caulfield from the book "The Catcher in the Rye". Only after he heard the tapes did he realize that Hannah had filled the form out seriously and had described Clay as her ideal match. Because Clay had not, he was not among Hannah's matches. Clay had a crush on Hannah, but he had no idea that she also had a crush on him. Clay wondered whether Hannah would still be alive if he had given honest answers, since two of Hannah's 13 reasons for killing herself directly related to her matches.
6. Why was Clay Jensen on Hannah Baker's list?

Answer: Hannah wanted to explain her behavior at the party where they kissed

On the tapes, Hannah said that Clay did not belong on her list the same way as the others did. However, while kissing Clay at the party, she became scared by the prospect of once again connecting with someone and having it "thrown back in my face." She wanted Clay to understand why she'd suddenly told him to go away and then screamed at him.

She also explained that she ignored him after the party because she was afraid to connect with him again.
7. In her tapes, Hannah Baker specifically discussed witnessing a major crime. What did she see?

Answer: At the party, Bryce Walker raped Jessica Davis while she was passed out

Hannah had hidden in a bedroom at the party while crying about all of the events in her past that had made her unwilling to trust Clay. While hidden, she saw Justin Foley bring Jessica Davis into the bedroom, but Jessica passed out and Justin left. However, Bryce Walker then came in, after telling Justin outside the door that he just needed a "few minutes" with Jessica, and raped her.
8. On the way home from the party, Jenny Kurtz (who was driving Hannah) did something that led to the death of a student at their high school. What?

Answer: Knocked down a stop sign

Jenny knocked down a stop sign and joked that people would thank her, since no one stopped at stop signs anyway. Hannah tried to get her to report it to the police, but Jenny refused and then got mad and left without Hannah. Shortly thereafter, two cars collided at the intersection when one of them failed to stop (due to the missing stop sign), killing its driver, a student who was working as a pizza delivery boy.

Hannah blamed herself for failing to stop either the rape or the traffic accident.
9. Clay was on the ninth of Hannah's 13 tapes. At the time that he received the tapes, who had the second copy of them?

Answer: Tony

Tony, who loaned Hannah the old-fashioned cassette recorder that she used to make the tapes, received the second copy of the tapes the day that she died and had made sure that each person passed the tapes to the next person.
10. After listening to all of Hannah Baker's tapes and mailing them to the next person on her list, what did Clay Jensen do?

Answer: Talked to Skye Miller

Clay realized that another of his classmates, Skye Miller, had undergone many of the same changes that Hannah described in herself, such as major changes in appearance and pulling away from friends. Hannah said that even her parents, who were worried about their business failing, failed to notice her changes. Clay had noticed them but had been afraid to discuss them with Hannah. Now, Clay was concerned that Skye was slipping away the same way that Hannah had, and so he followed her and started a conversation.
