Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which family member was nearly whipped in this book?

Answer: Peter

Peter had left the Di-Ahman settlement and gone after their lost horse. He was caught by mobbers when he tried to help a man who had been whipped. The mobbers tied Peter to a tree and would have whipped him if Matthew and Nathan had not come and rescued him.
Nathan was whipped in book two and Benjamin was beaten in book three.
2. Which two family members rode in the Battle of Crooked River?

Answer: Nathan and Matthew

The Battle of Crooked River was really just a skirmish, which the Mormons won. "Never has there been so great an example of winning the battle, but losing the war." At the threat of execution, the men who had fought in the battle were forced to flee Far West before the siege. It was at this battle that David Patten was killed - the first apostle martyr of the latter days.
3. Which of the following people died during the Haun's Mill Massacre?

Answer: John

Haun's Mill was one of the worst tragedies in LDS Church history. Mobbers rode in and shot anyone they saw. Seventeen people died and more were wounded. One mobber shot a twelve year old boy in the head while his younger brother watched.
4. Who saved the Steed women from three militia members in Far West?

Answer: Joshua

Nathan and Matthew had fled with the other men who fought at Crooked River and Benjamin and Derek had to go to the town square to surrender their arms. While the men were being held, General Lucas unleashed the Missouri militia on the town of Far West. Joshua burst into the Steed cabin at the last minute, saving the women from some of the militia.

He eventually was forced to shoot one of the men. The other two managed to catch Joshua when he was sneaking out of town. They shot him and left him for dead.

He survived, but ended up partly paralized.
5. Who saw Hyrum Smith before he was taken away and also helped Mother Smith say "goodbye" to her sons before they were carted off to Jackson County?

Answer: Rebecca

Rebecca had gone to Mary Smith's to help out. Hyrum was brought in chains to his cabin to gather a few personal items before being taken to Independence for trial. Once they left, Rebecca ran for Mother Smith and helped her get to the wagons so she could speak with her sons, Joseph and Hyrum.
6. Which family member was arrested with all of the other Mormon leaders by the militia of Missouri?

Answer: Benjamin

Nearly every male who held any kind of leadership position in the Church was arrested, mostly out of spite. They were marched through the cold and quartered in a building with no roof. Many grew sick, especially Benjamin, who almost died. The arrests were completely illegal and eventually the prisoners were released.
7. Who came to see Joseph Smith preach in Independence, Missouri?

Answer: Caroline and Will

Earlier in the year, Joseph had prophesied that an Elder would preach in Independence before the year was up. When Joshua heard this, he tried to discourage Joseph, because Jackson County was so unsafe for Mormons. But Joseph was a prisoner when many came to see him and ask questions. He preached a short sermon in answer to their questions.
8. Who accompanied Joshua on his trip to Georgia to find Caroline and the children?

Answer: Nathan

Even though Joshua tried to go alone, Nathan insisted on accompanying him. It was Nathan who told Caroline that Joshua was still alive and in the carriage outside. Unfortunately, the family was not reunited, as Will had run away to avenge Joshua's "murder".
9. Whose was the first family to leave for Illinois?

Answer: Jessica's

Jessica left with Amanda Smith, Mary Smith and Mercy Thompson. Matthew and Derek went along to help drive the wagons and Jenny and Katherine McIntire also went to help take care of the children. The group met Joshua, Caroline, Melissa and Carl along the way. Jessica continued on with her family and the McIntire girls as well as Caroline and Melissa. Derek and Matthew turned back to accompany Joshua and Carl to Far West with their wagons of supplies for the beleaguered family.
10. No Steed family member got married in this book.

Answer: false

Someone gets married in every "Work and the Glory" book through number seven. In "Thy Gold to Refine" it is Derek and Rebecca who get married.
