Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is John Adams in the opening scene?

Answer: Standing in a tower with the Liberty Bell

John Adams is in this tower thinking, when McNair, the congressional custodian, comes to inform him a vote is about to take place.
2. What does McNair tell John Adams they are going to vote on, in that opening scene?

Answer: Whether or not the Rhode Island Militia will be required to wear matching uniforms

McNair tells Adams this in the opening scene, and Adams replies "Oh please!" because there are more important things to be worrying about.
3. What does McNair refer to Stephan Hopkins, delegate of Rhode Island, as?

Answer: Old Grape N' Guts

Dr. Lyman Hall asks why congress has not yet started, and McNair tells him that "they'll be wanderin' in anytime now, with Old Grape N' Guts leadin' the pack." He calls him this because Hopkins is always calling for rum.
4. What colony does Dr. Lyman Hall represent?

Answer: Georgia

They introduce Dr. Lyman Hall in the second scene after John Adams and Abagail sing their first song "Till Then".
5. We are introduced to all the delegates of the continental Congress, and three of them represent Delaware. Who are they?

Answer: Cesar Rodney, Colonel Thomas McKean, and George Read

These three are introduced to Dr. Lyman Hall by Edward Rutledge. They come into Congress in deep argument because Read disagrees with the other two about independence.
6. Who are the five members of the Declaraton Committee?

Answer: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, Roger Sherman, and Thomas Jefferson

Jefferson did not want to be on the committee, as he was going back to Virginia that night. Franklin assured Jefferson that Adams would choose someone else to write the Declaration. After the song "But Mr. Adams", Jefferson is still made to write the document.
7. What insult starts the brawl between John Adams and John Dickinson?

Answer: lawyer

Though they do call each other madman, coward, and fribble, when lawyer is said a fight occurs because lawyers usually are seen as greedy, heartless villans.
8. About how many words did John Adams say that they had removed from the Declaration.

Answer: Close to 400

He mentions this after a delegate asks why Jefferson had not included deep-sea fishing rights in the Declaration.
9. What did John Dickinson decide to do instead of signing the Declaration of Independence?

Answer: He joined the continental army to fight for America.

When Judge Wilson votes "yea", Dickinson says "I cannot, in good conscience, sign that document, but since I hold this country no less dear than Mr. Adams, I shall join the army to fight in her defense."
10. How many colonies voted "yea" for independence, by the time everyone began to sign?

Answer: 13

The vote had to be unanimous. During the voting process, 12 colonies said "yea", while New York abstained. If you payed attention, Morris finally makes his own decision, and says "To hell with New York, I'll sign it anyway." Once he says this, McNair switches the New York vote to "yea", which makes the count 13.
