'Heathers' tells the story of Veronica - a member of the most popular clique in school. Veronica is disillusioned with her friends' superficiality, snobbery and bullying so when she meets Jason Dean, the mysterious new guy in school, she happily agrees to teach her friends a lesson or two.

However, things quickly spiral out of her control. Thanks to his father's influence, the finale of 'Heathers' has J.D. trying to blow up his school, with everyone in it, in a mass suicide bid. This was an early film of Slater's, in which he starred with Sean Connery. Set in 14th Century Italy, it tells the story of an English monk, William Baskerville (Connery), and his apprentice (Slater) who aim to investigate and solve a series of murders that are taking place in the monastery. The film is based on the book of the same name, written by Umberto Eco.

Slater plays Brian, a guy whose adopted brother is murdered. The police think it is a suicide, but when Brian discovers that the company his brother worked for is shipping arms to the Far East, he decides to investigate for himself. Although it's a pretty dreadful movie Slater does look cute sporting a spikey blond hair-do! The expression 'gleaming the cube' means reaching the pinnacle of skating excellence.

The sequel to 'Young Guns', this film centres around the question of whether Sheriff Pat Garrett really did kill his friend Billy the Kid. Slater spends most of the movie in competition with Billy (played by Emilio Estevez) over who is leader of the gang, and is constantly frustrated that nobody they meet on their travels knows his name.

This film is a good, fun re-telling of the old myth of 'Robin Hood and his Merry Men'. Christian Slater plays Will Scarlett. After his mother died, Robin became jealous when his father met another woman and fathered Will; Robin's father left Will and his mother as a result. Will is bitter about this desertion - hence the animosity he displays towards Robin.

Answer: Murder in the First

In 'Murder in the First' Slater plays a lawyer trying to prove that his client was driven mad by being cooped up in solitary confinement in Alcatraz for many years (the maximum confinement should have been 19 days). He claims that his client is not therefore responsible for the murder he committed afterwards, and should not be executed.

The first scene opens in a bar where Clarence tries to chat up a blonde woman. He then goes to the movie theatre to watch a kung fu triple bill, here he meets Alabama when she (deliberately) spills her popcorn on him. He then takes her to the comic store where he works. Later, he goes to her pimp's house (played by Gary Oldman) and kills him.

Slater plays the journalist who is conducting an interview with a vampire, who tells the story of his long life. The film, based on the novel by Anne Rice, also stars Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Antonio Banderas as some of the dishy vampires. River Phoenix was originally cast for the part of the journalist.

Answer: Pump Up the Volume

Slater plays the new kid in town; he is very shy by day but at night he lets out all his angst through his DJ persona 'Hard Harry'. He manages to incur the wrath of the school principal, and secure the love of Nora (played by Samantha Mathis). When one of Harry's listeners commits suicide, the authorities are forced to find Harry and shut down the station.

He starred with Lisanne Falk in 'Heathers', Patricia Arquette in 'True Romance', and Cameron Diaz in 'Very Bad Things'. Rosie Perez also starred in 'Untamed Heart' but not as his love interest. In 'Untamed Heart' he plays a young boy who believes he has the heart of an animal.

He works in a kitchen and falls in love with one of his co-workers. The film is a real tear-jerker so I won't give away the ending.
