quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This dismal movie was the pet project of Scientologist John Travolta. It was lambasted by everyone who saw it as a completely unwatchable piece of celluloid.

Answer: Battlefield Earth

John Travolta headlined the cast of this truly awful adaptation of L. Ron Hubbard's equally unreadable novel. It made less than 30 million dollars domestically and didn't deserve a dime of what it did make.
2. Madonna knows what it's like to flop in the theatre. Then husband Sean Penn joined her in this horrific pastiche of '30s adventure films.

Answer: Shanghai Surprise

While the other three choices were bad Madonna movies as well, it was "Shanghai Surprise" that really foretold just how doomed her marriage was to be.
3. This legendary flop starred Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman as terrible lounge singers trying to make it big but get entrenched in a spy game.

Answer: Ishtar

This movie was bad, but not as bad as it was claimed. Hoffman gives a credible performance despite the horrid writing that plagued the whole film.
4. Roland Emmerich directed this 1998 version of a classic, which flopped miserably in the US Box Office. Matthew Broderick starred along with a cast of little-knowns.

Answer: Godzilla

All have been remade, but none fared as badly as Emmerich's "Godzilla" retelling. Stunning graphics weren't enough to save the lame script from box office failure.
5. Made on the heels of a very successful predecessor, this Sandra Bullock starrer was so bad that her costar from the original movie refused to take part in it. As a result it made under 50 million dollars.

Answer: Speed II: Cruise Control

This movie was so bad that Keanu Reeves took a look at the script and passed. Bullock comes off as merely an airhead and Willem Dafoe makes an unconvincing villain. Not to mention the way he was off was completely ridiculous.
6. Kevin Costner has had his share of expensive flops. This is the first of two of them, a very expensive picture that co-starred Jeanne Tripplehorn.

Answer: Waterworld

"Waterworld" was the first of the two major league flops that Costner was responsible for. "Dances with Wolves" was a good movie, which probably explains where Costner got the financing for this dud.
7. This was the second one of Costner's major league box office disasters. It takes place in an apocalyptic future and costarred Will Patton, Larenz Tate and rock singer Tom Petty.

Answer: The Postman

"The Postman" was long winded and pointless. Costner was mostly annoying as the 'Why Me?' hero. It might have been watchable if it was about half as long. It seems his taste in movie-making pretty much was used up with "Dances With Wolves".
8. This Geena Davis movie was directed by her husband at the time, Renny Harlin. This so-called drama co-starred Matthew Modine.

Answer: Cutthroat Island

This 90 million dollar disaster foundered just like their marriage did. It also managed to sink a studio, as Carolco went under due to the losses that this bomb inflicted.
9. Yet another sequel to bite the dust, this 1998 dud took a cute kids movie and moved it into the city. Its strangely named farm animal couldn't bring viewers in and grossed only 11 million.

Answer: Babe: Pig In the City

"Babe: Pig in the City" from all accounts is an unwatchable piece of trash. I don't go for kids movies, but I don't believe the kids even wanted to see that film.
10. Despite starring Brad Pitt and Claire Forlani, this movie made one of the worst losses for its studio in history. Though Brad Pitt as Death could have been a selling point, the fact that he survived it pretty much guaranteed that the movie wouldn't. What film was this?

Answer: Meet Joe Black

Universal very nearly went under as two of its most expensive products grossed less than 50 million dollars combined. This was about half of what "Meet Joe Black" cost alone.
