Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Preston's wife's name?

Answer: Viviana

Mary is the name of the woman John falls in love with during the movie. Lisa is his daughter. We hear him asking to see the video record of Viviana Preston's "sentence and incineration" just before Mary gets burned. His lack of reaction on the recording seems to shock him into trying to save Mary.

He realizes that he loved his wife and that he now loves Mary and cannot stand by and watch her die.
2. The cars in Libria, like everything else, were all exactly alike. What unusual feature did these cars have?

Answer: They had featureless dashboards.

When I first caught a glimpse of the inside of the cars it just looked odd. Then I realized that there was nothing on the dashboard, no radio or climate controls at all. Of course, after thinking about it, it made sense since music was outlawed as too emotion-causing and the car could be programmmed to keep the temperature even, as everyone would be expected to have the same needs.
3. Pets are not understood by the people of Libria. When the clerics find a group of dogs being defended by some of the Resistance fighters, what does Brandt guess that the dogs are for?

Answer: Food

Brandt seems to be baffled by the fighters' defense of the dogs. He asks Preston if he thinks they eat them. This was a tough scene for me because the sound effects of the dogs being shot was well done. At least they didn't show any actual shots. The dog that Preston rescues is a Bernese Mountain dog. He is a very cute puppy!
4. What is the full name of the office that Preston works for?

Answer: Tetragrammiton

Tetragrammiton is the Greek word for the name of the Hebrew God. Transliterated into the English alphabet, it reads JHVH. It is pronounced in the west as Jehovah. The government in this movie seems to be based on an odd form of religion. Priests (clerics) are the law enforcement officials and they call their leader Father. Taking the drug Prosium is not only required by law but is an act of faith.
5. Preston's first emotional outburst comes when he is wandering through the stash of contraband he finds by himself. We see him examining a snowglobe. What monument is inside?

Answer: The Eiffel Tower

Preston drops the globe when the music he put on the record player begins. The piece is from the 1st movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony. Preston begins crying during the piece, as he is not used to feeling his emotions so strongly and is not prepared to control them. He seems to have regained his composure in the next scene with his partner, Brandt.
6. What was the reply to, "What would you say is the easiest way to get a weapon away from a Grammiton Cleric?"

Answer: "You ask him for it."

This is one of my favorite quotes from the movie. The question is answered by Brandt, Preston's new partner. This is the point where Preston finds out that he has been set up by Father. We find out that they have known all along that Preston stopped taking his Prosium but they were stringing him along to get to the Resistance.
7. At the beginning of the film, Partridge, Preston's first partner, takes a book of poems by Yeats from the scene of a burning. Later, Preston also saves a book from combustion. What book is this?

Answer: A book of nursery rhymes

The conversation that Preston and Partridge have at the beginning, about Partridge taking the book is mirrored later when Preston takes his book and Brandt asks about it. Preston is beginning to understand what his first partner had felt and the choices he had made.
8. Who confronts Preston with his untaken intervals (Prosium capsules)?

Answer: his son

This occurs when Preston's apartment is being searched and he is worried about them finding his stash of Prosium capsules. His son has found them and the first-time viewer thinks he will be turned in for the missed doses. This is where we discover that the children have ceased their intervals ever since their mother was arrested.
9. What is the name of the martial art used in the movie?

Answer: Gun Kata

This is one of very few movies which present the use of firearms in such an elegant fashion. The style was invented by writer/director Kurt Wimmer. As with other martial arts, when a weapon is used it is as an extension of the body. In this case, the weapon is the handgun. By studying thousands of gunfights they have mapped out the most probable locations of the enemy shooters and also the most probable trajectories of the bullets.

The Gun Kata fighter then learns where to shoot and where to dodge.

Therefore, rather than shooting a number of rounds hoping to hit his target, the fighter shoots, knowing exactly where his bullets will go.
10. Father's office, as seen at the end of the movie, is very opulent, in direct opposition to his teachings. Which of these is not shown in his office?

Answer: Oriental rugs

The office we see earlier in the movie is his office as the head of the council. Later, after finding out that Dupont is Father, we see Father's office. I did find it interesting that Brandt and the other officers there did not seem to take exception to the illegal items. Apparently Father is allowed things that mortals are not.
