Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This film was (and still is) acclaimed as one of the most visually stunning and innovative movies ever made. The special effects were years ahead of anything done until the CGI era. Can you name this movie?

Answer: 2001: A Space Odyssey

"2001: A Space Odyssey" is a story about strange alien monoliths that seem to hold the key to human evolution and contact with alien civilizations. Two American astronauts are sent on a mission to Jupiter to make contact with one of the monoliths when a computer malfunction costs one astronaut his life, while the other makes an amazing discovery.

The film stars Kier Dullea and Gary Lockwood.
2. Can you name this movie - a comedy set during World War II? The Italians capture six Allied generals and house them in a villa. An American private, a malcontent and escape artist, is sent in to help them escape.

Answer: The Secret War of Harry Frigg

Six Allied Brigadier Generals, British, French, and American, are captured by the Italians and housed in a villa. Private Harry Frigg, an American malcontent and escape artist, is sent in disguise as a Major General, outranking all of the prisoners, who haven't escaped because they are too rank-conscious to make one the leader and formulate a plan. Between having an affair with an Italian countess and the Germans moving the prisoners after Italy surrenders, Frigg manages to free the generals and get promoted. The film stars Paul Newman, Andrew Duggan, and Tom Bosley.
3. This film is a fictional story of King Henry II of England, his estranged wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, plus his sons Richard, John, and Geoffrey spending a turbulent Christmas holiday together in the year 1183. Can you name it?

Answer: The Lion in Winter

This film is an intense drama that depicts the dysfunctional family of the English King Henry II. His estranged wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, whom Henry had imprisoned, is released to spend the Christmas holidays with King Henry and their three sons, Richard (the Lion-Hearted), John, and Geoffrey.

The tensions in the family are revealed as Henry tries to decide who will succeed him to the English throne. The film stars Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, Timothy Dalton, and Nigel Terry.
4. What is the name of this movie, which tells the story of the intense police manhunt for a serial killer terrorizing the American city of Boston in the early 1960s?

Answer: The Boston Strangler

Tony Curtis, previously known for light comedy roles, plays Albert DeSalvo, the man who confessed to being the Boston Strangler, a serial killer who murdered 13 women in Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1960s. The film also stars Henry Fonda and George Kennedy.
5. What is the name of this animated film, starring a well-known British rock group?

Answer: Yellow Submarine

Set in a world called Pepperland, which is under attack by the music hating Blue Meanies, "Yellow Submarine" has the Beatles saving the world of Pepperland with their music. The boys from Liverpool are voiced by actors in the film, but the songs are original.
6. What is the name of this movie, an historical epic that details the events surrounding the 1854 Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War?

Answer: The Charge of the Light Brigade

This well-produced British costume drama stars Trevor Howard, John Gielgud, and David Hemmings. The petty feuds between the commanding officers, their callous disregard for their soldier's lives, and the hardships caused by the abysmal supply chain are all evident in this film. The costuming is excellent, as are the battle scenes.
7. Do you know the name of this 1968 movie, where American astronauts from the year 1972 land on a planet where humans are primitive, mute creatures who are hunted by the world's dominant species?

Answer: Planet of the Apes

In the film "Planet of the Apes", four Earth astronauts land on a planet after being in stasis for 2000 years. The only female among them has died due to a malfunction with her life support system. The three male astronauts discover a world where apes are the dominant species and humans are regarded as pests and subjects for medical experiments.

The movie stars Charlton Heston, Maurice Evans, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, and Linda Harrison. A new version of the movie was made in 2001.
8. This John Wayne film is loosely based on the career of Red Adair, who headed a team that specialized in putting out oil well fires all over the world. The film details the personal lives of the team members while they perform their dangerous jobs. What is it called?

Answer: Hellfighters

A film about the men who fight oil well fires and their family lives, "Hellfighters" stars John Wayne, Jim Hutton, Katherine Ross, and Vera Miles. While the plot line of the boss's (Wayne) daughter falling in love with one of his underlings is fairly predictable, the special effects are worth viewing.
9. Can you name this movie, set in modern day Pennsylvania? Radiation from an exploded space probe reaches the Earth, re-animating human corpses who have an insatiable hunger for the living.

Answer: Night of the Living Dead

Directed by George A. Romero and filmed in western Pennsylvania on a shoestring budget, "Night of the Living Dead" is about several people hiding out in a remote farmhouse while zombies, reanimated corpses that feed on the living, surround the house to get at the occupants. Filmed in grainy black and white and surprisingly gory for the time, the film stars Judith O'Dea and Duane Jones.
10. Do you know the name of this movie, in which a divorced New York sportswriter invites his recently separated friend to share his apartment?

Answer: The Odd Couple

Based on the play by Neil Simon, "The Odd Couple" is a hilarious story of how Oscar Madison, a consummate slob, ends up living with Felix Unger, who is obsessively clean and neat. The two divorced men drive each other crazy, but each man realizes that they need one another. The film stars Walter Matthau as Oscar and Jack Lemmon as Felix.
