Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the actress who played Alex's friend, mentor and 'mother figure', Hannah.

Answer: Lilia Skala

Lilia Skala, a native of Vienna, played the supporting, encouraging Hannah. Skala had an interesting and varied career. She appeared on the daytime dramas "Guiding Light" and "Search for Tomorrow", and she also played Lisa Douglas' (Eva Gabor's) mom on "Green Acres".

However, Skala's probably best known as Mother Maria, the feisty nun in the film, "Lilies of the Field", which starred Sidney Poitier. She received an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for that performance.
2. Name the actress/dancer who played Alex's friend and fellow dancer, Tina Tech. She spent a lot of time waiting on a phone call.

Answer: Cynthia Rhodes

Cynthia Rhodes played the energetic, athletic Tina. A talented dancer (and pretty good singer), Rhodes also appeared in several other musical movies, including "Dirty Dancing", "Xanadu", and "Staying Alive", the "Saturday Night Fever" sequel, in which she also sang.

Her "Flashdance" performance was highly memorable: She performed a very energetic dance to Karen Kamon's "Manhunt". By the way, the other three ladies were featured dancers in the film, "Staying Alive".
3. Name the actress who played Alex's friend, Jeanie, a waitress at Mawby's Bar, and ice skater.

Answer: Sunny Johnson

Sunny Johnson played Jeanie, the skater who wanted to be a dancer like her friend, Alex. Sadly, Sunny died in 1984 from an aneurysm. By the way, Liz Sagal and Stacy Pickren were featured dancers in "Flashdance". Hilary Carlip was a featured dancer in the film, "Xanadu".
4. Name the actress who played Alex's friend and fellow dancer at Mawby's, Heels.

Answer: Durga McBroom

Heels was a small but interesting part. Though she didn't do a dance number in the film, she appears to be a quite capable dancer. There was a rumor at the time that the producers originally wanted Grace Jones for the part.
5. Jennifer Beals did all her own dancing in the film.

Answer: False

Jennifer has said that she did some of her own dancing. However, dancer Marine Jahan was the main dancing double for Alex, though there were others as well. Interestingly, though Jahan was more muscular and a few inches shorter than Jennifer Beals, seemingly not many people noticed the difference.
6. Scene: The stage at Mawby's. Alex begins her routine, dressed in a beautiful red 2-piece skirt set with white top, and a white coat-type wrap and headband. She's sitting in front of a big television set. The music starts as a gust of wind blows across the stage. Laura Branigan is the artist. Name the song to which Alex dances.

Answer: Imagination

"Imagination" provides the backdrop for this 'imaginative' sequence. The close-up shot near the end of this scene makes it obvious that Jennifer Beals is not the dancer. By the way, "Gloria", another Laura Branigan hit, was featured during Jeanie's ice skating competition.
7. Scene: Mawby's Bar, Halloween Night. Ritchie walks in wearing a crocodile/alligator costume, having recently returned from L. A. where he tried his luck as a comic. Heels and her boss, Jake, are dancing onstage. A song by Donna Summer is playing. Which one?

Answer: Romeo

"Romeo", written by Pete Bellotte and Sylvestor Levay, and produced by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, was an interesting choice of song for Donna Summer. It was definitely not her typical sound.
8. Scene: A city street. Alex and Jeanie are out walking. They come upon a group of young people breakdancing. One young man does a spin on his back. Jimmy Castor and the Castor Bunch provide the soundtrack for this scene. Name the song that's playing.

Answer: It's Just Begun

Jimmy Castor and the Castor Bunch are probably best known for their 'novelty' hit, "Bertha Butt Boogie". By the way, this scene is notable because Alex 'borrows' and incorporates the breakdancing back-spin into her audition at the end of the movie.
9. Scene: Alex has just found out that her friend, Hannah, has passed away. She mopes around the house for a while, then goes to Mawby's to take her belongings home. A song by Kim Carnes is playing. Which song?

Answer: I'll Be Here Where the Heart Is

Though Kim Carnes has had other hits, including the Top 10 remake of the Smokey Robinson classic, "More Love", she's best known for the number 1 smash, "Bette Davis Eyes".
10. Name the director of "Flashdance".

Answer: Adrian Lyne

Adrian Lyne, "Flashdance"'s director, went on to direct other hits, including "Fatal Attraction", starring Michael Douglas and Glen Close, and the interesting, visionary film, "Jacob's Ladder". Bruckheimer and Simpson were the film's producers. Interestingly, "Flashdance" was their first production.

They would go on to produce other mega-hits, including "Top Gun", and "Beverly Hills Cop".
