Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Do I look like I need a psychological evaluation?" "Not at all." (Hint: Tommy Lee Jones is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Under Siege

In this scene an angry Commander Krill, dressed as a drag queen (Gary Busey), shouts line one and terrorist William Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones), calmly replies with line two. Krill has just read his personnel evaluation, retrieved from the safe of Captain Adams (Patrick O'Neal) after the Captain has been killed.

In the events leading up to this scene, the battleship USS Missouri is to be decommissioned and the ship's crew is about to celebrate the birthday of Captain Adams. They've hired a band led by Strannix to be brought aboard, along with former Playboy playmate Jordan Tate (Erika Eleniak), who is to jump out of a cake and dance.

However, Strannix is really a terrorist who plans to take over the ship and then sell the Tomahawk missiles on board.

In the 1993 Academy Awards "Under Siege" was nominated for two awards but didn't win either. The real USS Missouri has been refurbished and is on permanent public display in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii next to the USS Arizona memorial.
2. "Name a shrub after me. Something prickly and hard to eradicate." "A shrub? Nonsense. I'll name a great tortoise after you." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

In this scene Capt. Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) and Dr. Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany), surgeon aboard the British warship HMS Surprise during the Napoleonic Wars, are discussing Dr. Maturin's plan to explore the Galapagos Islands. The doctor hopes to discover some unknown plants or animals and name something after his friend. Capt. Aubrey says line one and Dr. Maturin replies with line two.

In the 2004 Academy Awards "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" won two Oscars and was nominated in eight other categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King").

The screenplay for this movie is based on two novels: "Master and Commander" and "The Far Side of the World." Both are by Patrick O'Brian.
3. "I see dead people." "In your dreams?" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Sixth Sense

In this scene a troubled young boy, Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), is explaining his troubles to child psychiatrist Doctor Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis). When Cole says line one, Doctor Crowe asks line two. When Doctor Crowe asks "Dead people like in graves? In coffins?" Cole explains, "Walking around like regular people.

They don't see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don't know they're dead." In the 2000 Academy Awards "The Sixth Sense" was nominated for six awards, including Best Picture (but lost to "American Beauty").

It won no Oscars but did win numerous other awards. This is one of those rare movies that was filmed in sequence, which is usually not a very practical way of making a movie.
4. "You're late." "A wizard is never late, _________. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to." (Hint: Ian McKellen is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

In the events leading up to this scene, the Dark Lord Sauron long ago forged a Ring of Power to control all the peoples and creatures of Middle Earth. This ring fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm), a Hobbit from The Shire, who later bequeathed the ring to his young nephew Frodo (Elijah Wood).

In this scene the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) arrives in The Shire for Bilbo Baggins' birthday party and Frodo says line one on seeing him arrive in a horse-drawn cart. Gandalf wisely replies with line two.

When Gandalf learns the ring is in fact the One Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron, he realizes it must be destroyed by carrying it to Mount Doom, the evil place of its birth, by casting it into the eternal fires that forged it. In the 2002 Academy Awards "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" won four Oscars.

It was also nominated in nine other categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "A Beautiful Mind"). All three "The Lord of the Rings" movies ("The Fellowship of the Ring" in 2001, "The Two Towers" in 2002, and "The Return of the King" in 2003) were filmed simultaneously.

The back-to-back shoot lasted 274 days. This is a risky way to film a trilogy, but it has the big advantages of having the same actors portray the same characters in all three movies and avoids contract negotiation problems.
5. "I would have stayed for two thousand." "I would have paid four." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Pretty Woman

In this scene businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) has just negotiated a fee of three thousand dollars for a full week of prostitute Vivian Ward's time (Julia Roberts). Vivian thinks she has outnegotiated Edward and says line one but Edward replies with line two. Edward has traveled to Hollywood, California to conclude a business deal and, after a chance meeting while asking directions, wants to hire Vivian to accompany him to some social functions.

The interaction of Vivian's street-savy mannerisms with Edward's rarified level of society leads to some pretty funny situations.

In the 1991 Academy Awards, Julia Roberts was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role but lost the Oscar to Kathy Bates in "Misery." This was Ralph Bellamy's final movie (he played businessman James Morse, who owned the shipyard that Edward was planning to purchase).
6. "Come on, Norman, they're openin' up the bar." "We've just got to get organized. We've got to get organized! (Hint: The cast of this hilarious comedy includes Carl Reiner, Jonathan Winters and Alan Arkin.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming

When this movie was released in 1966, the Cold War was very much a concern and the scenario depicted was both funny and serious. In the events leading up to this scene, Walt Whittaker (Carl Reiner) and his family are vacationing in a rented house on Gloucester Island, off the coast of New England.

A Russian submarine captain, trying to get a glimpse of America through the sub's periscope, gets too close to land and runs aground. A small party of Russian sailors headed by Lieutenant Rozanov (Alan Arkin) then head to land to try and commandeer a motorboat to pull the sub free. Local residents converge on the town center, after hearing various versions of how the Russians have invaded their island (the scenes just before this are a textbook example of how rumors get started).

In this scene a local resident says line one (in a great New England accent). Frustrated Deputy Sheriff Norman Jones (Jonathan Winters) mutters line two. In the 1967 Academy Awards, "The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming" was nominated in four categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "A Man for All Seasons"). "The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming" is one of my favorite movies.
7. "What chance do you think you'd have of staying alive back there?" "Well, I'm not so easy to kill." (Hint: Gregory Peck is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Guns of Navarone

In the events leading up to this scene, set in World War II, the British have concluded that two big radar-controlled German guns, protecting the Aegean Sea lanes near the Greek town of Navarone, cannot be destroyed by sea or air attack. A task force of six men, each with special skills, is assembled to scale the steep cliff and destroy the guns in a land assault.

In this scene, after the surviving members of the force are about to escape in a motorboat after destroying the guns, widowed Col. Andrea Stavros (Anthony Quinn) has decided to return to Navarone with Greek resistance fighter Maria Pappadimos (Irene Papas). Group leader Capt. Keith Mallory (Gregory Peck) says line one and Col. Stavros replies with line two.

In the 1962 Academy Awards, "The Guns of Navarone" was nominated in seven categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "West Side Story").

It did win one Oscar. Although this movie seems realistic, this is a work of fiction. There was no such mission, because there never were any guns of Navarone.
8. "We come far, you and me." "I will not forget you." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Dances with Wolves

In the events leading up to this scene U.S. Civil War veteran Lt. John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) is stationed at a remote western U.S. Army outpost and makes friends with some local Sioux Indians. They bestow on him the Indian name of Dances with Wolves, for his relationship with a local wild wolf.

He ultimately realizes he must leave the Indian camp for the safety of the others. As he prepares to leave camp, he says goodbye to his good friend Kicking Bird (Graham Greene), who says line one to him. Dances with Wolves replies to him with line two.

In the 1991 Academy Awards "Dances with Wolves" won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Kevin Costner for Best Director. John Barry won the Oscar for Best Music, Original Score. This wonderful soundtrack is one of my all-time favorites. Kevin Costner, Graham Greene and Mary McDonnell were also nominated for acting awards but did not win.

When Stands With A Fist (Mary McDonnell) is remembering how she was captured by the Pawnee Indian party who killed her family, she was played, as the young girl Christine, by Kevin Costner's daughter Annie (who was six years old at the time).
9. "The Bolsheviks trust you?" "They trust no one. They found me useful." (Hint: Rod Steiger is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Doctor Zhivago

In this scene, survivor Viktor Komarovsky (Rod Steiger) visits Dr. Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) and Lara Antipova (Julie Christie) in the Russian town of Yuriatin, just after the Russian Revolution and informs them he has been appointed Minister of Justice by the Bolsheviks.

He also tells them Lara's husband, political activist Strelnikov, has killed himself while being walked to his execution and that Lara is in immediate danger. An incredulous Yuri says line one and Viktor explains with line two.

In the events leading up to this scene, young Dr. Zhivago meets and falls in love with nurse Lara, loses track of her and then finds her again. Much of this movie is set during the Russian Revolution and against the vastness of the Russian landscape.

In the 1966 Academy Awards "Doctor Zhivago" won five Oscars and was nominated for five more, including Best Picture (but lost to "The Sound of Music") and David Lean for Best Director. The vastness of the Russian frontier in winter snow is spectacular on a wide screen.
10. "Take her to sea, Mr. Murdoch. Let's stretch her legs." "Yes sir." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Titanic

In this scene Captain Smith (Bernard Hill) is talking to his First Officer Murdoch (Ewan Stewart) on an upper deck of RMS Titanic, after it leaves port on its very first voyage. Captain Smith says line one, while holding a cup of tea, and First Officer Murdoch replies with line two.

The movie "Titanic" tells the true-life story of the luxurious White Star ocean liner RMS Titanic, that sank in 1912 on its maiden voyage, through the lives of the two main fictional characters, Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose Bukater (played as a young woman by Kate Winslet and as an old woman by Gloria Stuart).

In the 1998 Academy Awards "Titanic" won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Song (for "My Heart Will Go On" sung by Celine Dion). Both Gloria Stuart and Kate Winslet were nominated for Oscars, but neither won.

The designation "RMS" stands for "Royal Mail Steamship" (also called Steamer or Ship).
