Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1941 film about a Welsh mining town won an Academy Award for Best Picture, is directed by John Ford, and stars Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara, Donald Crisp, and a young Roddy McDowall. Looking at the photo, please tell me the film's title.

Answer: How Green Was My Valley

Not only did "How Green Was My Valley" win an Oscar for Best Picture, but John Ford won an Academy Award for Best Director and Donald Crisp won for Best Supporting Actor. The film also won the Oscars for Best Black-and-White Cinematography and for Best Black-and-White Art Direction.

While the film has sometimes been criticized for being overly sentimental in various scenes, those same critics claim the film is saved by the very talented acting and the superb direction of John Ford. Interestingly, Ford was not the first choice as director of the film. William Wyler was hired first, and it was he who selected Roddy McDowall to play Huw Morgan.

It was this role that set McDowall on the path to lifelong career in film and that allowed him to meet Maureen O'Hara with whom he became a lifelong friend.
2. Evelyn Couch makes several visits to Ninny Threadgoode, an elderly woman who is currently residing in a nursing home in Anderson, Alabama. Over the course of these visits, Ninny tells Evelyn stories about the Whistle Stop Cafe and the relationship between two women who worked there: Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison. These stories become quite intense as Ninny relates how Idgie is eventually accused of murdering her abusive husband. Using a clue from the picture, can you guess the title of this movie?

Answer: Fried Green Tomatoes

The 1991 movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" is an adaptation of Fanny Flagg's novel "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café". Mary Stuart Masterson plays Idgie Threadgood, Mary-Louise Parker plays Ruth Jamison, Kathy Bates plays Evelyn Couch, and Jessica Tandy plays Ninny Threadgoode. Fanny Flagg, whom many may remember as a panelist on the TV game show "Match Game", has achieved fame as a writer despite her early struggles with dyslexia. She is the co-writer of the screenplay of the film and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Jessica Tandy was nominated for the first time for an Academy Award in 1989 for her role in "Driving Miss Daisy", and she won the Best Actress Oscar at the age of seventy-nine. Her next film was "Fried Green Tomatoes", and she was nominated a second time for an Academy Award--this time for Best Supporting Actress--but she lost. Earlier in her career, she won the 1948 Tony Award for best performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for her role as Blanche Dubois in the original Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire".

The film "Fried Green Tomatoes" was criticized by some because of its timid handling of the lesbian relationship between Idgie and Ruth, a relationship that is explicit in Flagg's novel.
3. Andie MacDowell plays Bronte Parrish, a woman who lies about being married so that she can rent an apartment with access to a garden as she is a seriously devoted horticulturalist and environmentalist. Gerard Depardieu plays Georges Faure, a boorish French alien desperately seeking a means of remaining in the United States, whether legally or not. The two meet, and despite having incongruous personalities, they decide to pretend to be married so that each can get what he or she wants. With a clue provided by the accompanying picture, can you name this film directed and written by Peter Weir?

Answer: Green Card

If you are a fan of Peter Weir's films ("Gallipoli", "The Year of Living Dangerously", "Witness", "Dead Poets Society", "The Truman Show", and many others), then "Green Card" may be a good movie to watch; it's a complete Weir vehicle as it is produced, directed, and written by him.

While several American and British critics did not review the film favorably, it was generally well-received by the rest of the world. In fact, it won the Golden Globe in 1990 for Best Motion Picture--Musical or Comedy. Depardieu also won the Golden Globe for Best Actor--Motion Picture Musical or Comedy while MacDowell was nominated for the compatible Actress Globe. However, the Academy Awards seemed to dismiss the film and nominated it for only one award, which it lost--Best Orginal Screeplay. The film was Peter Weir's first attempt at romantic comedy and the screenplay was written by him specifically for Depardieu. The movie is typical of Weir's films in that while it is hopefully romantic in scope, the characters find themselves always linked with reality (consider some of Weir's other films like "Witness", "Dead Poets Society", and "The Mosquito Coast").

If you are wondering after looking at the accompanying picture why a green card is called a "green card" when it is obviously not green, the explanation is that an older version of the card was once green. The card was eventually altered because of the ease at which counterfeiters could duplicate the earlier card that was the color of green; however, the popular name for the document remained the same.
4. In this 2012 film, Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton play a couple who are trying to convince an adoption counselor to permit them to adopt a child. They share a remarkable story about a boy who appeared in their lives for a short while after the two made a list of the qualities their dream child would have, placed the slips of paper in a box similar to the one in the picture, and buried it in their back yard. What film is this?

Answer: The Odd Life of Timothy Green

The boy, Timothy Green, was played by CJ Adams, who received much critical acclaim for his performance. However, critics were not very pleased overall with the film as they felt it was overly sentimental and possessed a quality reminiscent of Frank Capra films of an older time. Of course, many of viewing public did not mind these qualities present in the Disney produced film.

A mud-covered Timothy Green appears in the Greens' house one night after a thunderstorm occurs oddly over only the Greens' property. The couple find a large hole near where they had buried the box, which is now in pieces. Furthermore, Timothy has leaves growing on his legs, and these odd growths cannot be removed. However, the viewers of the film later discover that a leaf falls off on its own every time Timothy accomplishes something that fulfills one of the qualities the Greens had written on one of the slips of paper they had enclosed within the box. Timothy eventually explains that he cannot stay with the Greens forever and that he will leave when the last leaf falls from his legs. One night during another odd rainstorm, Timothy disappears as mysteriously as he appeared.
5. Matt Damon plays Roy Miller, a U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer stationed in Baghdad during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He has grown frustrated with his constant failure to find any weapons of mass destruction and begins a hunt for General Mohammad Al-Rawi (played by Igal Naor), who can verify that there are no WMD's in Iraq. However, Miller must race against the forces of Pentagon Special Intelligence Officer Clark Poundstone (played by Greg Kinnear) who wants to silence Al-Rawi before he can tell the world the United States has made a mistake. Using the photo for assistance, can you guess what 2010 film this is?

Answer: Green Zone

"Green Zone" is an adaptation of the non-fiction book "Imperial Life in the Emerald City", which is journalist Rajiv Chandrasekaran's documentation of life inside Baghdad's Green Zone during the Coalition's invasion of Iraq. The term "Green Zone" refers to the relatively luxurious administrative district of Baghdad previously occupied by the Ba-ath Party government. It was the site of very heavy battles and some bombings during the Coalition invasion and was then occupied by American invasion forces as well as several homeless Iraqis. The Green Zone is sometimes referred to as the "International Zone" as well as "Karradat Mariam".

Speaking of "green", the film was directed by Paul Greengrass. Khalid Abdalla, Brendan Gleeson, Jason Isaacs, and Amy Ryan also star.
6. In 1968, a film with an obvious anti-communist agenda was released about a correspondent opposed to America's involvement in Vietnam. He travels with a band of special forces led by the hard-nosed Col. Mike Kirby and gradually changes his mind as he gains a respect for American soldiers. Consider each word in each of the available answers for this question and then look closely at every little detail in the accompanying painting. One item in the painting shares its name with one of the words in one of the answers. Can you guess the correct film?

Answer: The Green Berets

John Wayne not only starred in "The Green Berets", but he also shared in the directing responsibilities. While his own son Michael Wayne produced the movie, Wayne was truly the principal force behind its being filmed; he was frustrated by the anti-war attitude of many Americans during the Vietnam War, so he personally bought all of the rights from the book's author Robin Moore, acquired information from President Lyndon Johnson, and achieved full cooperation from the United States military. The film also starred another of Wayne's sons, Patrick Wayne as well as George Takei of "Star Trek" fame, Jim Hutton father of Timothy Hutton, and David Janssen who played lead in the American TV series "The Fugitive".

"Green Berets" is the popular term for the members of the United States Army Special Forces. These soldiers are trained for primarily five missions: unconditional warfare, counter terrorism, foreign internal defense, direct action, and special reconnaissance. The formal service headgear for a Special Forces soldier is, indeed, a green beret.
7. In this 1919 silent film adaptation of an internationally popular novel, a character named Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew decide to adopt an orphaned boy to help alleviate their loneliness as well as help out around their Prince Edward Island home. However, they are sent a girl by mistake. After they decide to keep her, the girl experiences several predicaments, many of them comical. Eventually, she has more mature experiences such as falling in love with Gilbert Blythe and working to save up enough money to pay for Marilla's surgery so that she can see again. Looking at the accompanying photograph for a clue, can you tell me the name of this movie?

Answer: Anne of Green Gables

The orphaned girl and main character--Anne Shirley--is played by Mary Miles Minter while the other important roles are played by the following: Frederick Burton as Matthew Cuthbert, Marcia Harris as Marilla Cuthbert, and Paul Kelly as Gilbert Blythe. The film is an adaptation of Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 novel "Anne of Green Gables", which became an international sensation tremendously popular in the United States, several countries in Europe, and Japan. In fact, the novel remains so popular in the United Kingdom that Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) insisted on visiting Prince Edward Island, where the story is set, when she and Prince William made a royal visit to Canada.

While the story is definitely set in Prince Edward Island, the 1919 movie was filmed in Dedham, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, most now believe the prints of this film to be lost.

Several film and TV movie adaptations exist of this story, including a 1934 film directed by George Nichols, Jr., and the very popular 1985 CBC production starring Megan Follows as Anne.
8. In 1959, MGM released a film based on a William Henry Hudson novel that tells the tale of a Venezuelan refugee, played by Anthony Perkins, who survives various encounters in the jungle, where he meets a young woman, played by Audrey Hepburn, with whom he falls in love. The accompanying photograph contains a clue to the film's title. Can you tell me the name of this movie?

Answer: Green Mansions

"Green Mansions" is one of the few films starring Audrey Hepburn that did not do well with critics or at the box office. Mel Ferrer, the director, shot footage of South American jungle around the Orinoco river that he used in the film but decided that most of the natural scenery was too dense and dark to use for filming scenes involving actors. Most of the film ended up being shot on sets in Lone Pine, California.

However, Ferrer did have several birds and animals shipped to Lone Pine so that natural fauna could be incorporated into the film.

In fact, he had a baby deer shipped directly to Hepburn, with whom he was married at the time, so that she and the deer could establish a relationship with each other as the character she plays in the film interacts personally with surrounding animals.

Other actors appearing in the film include Lee J. Cobb and Henry Silva.
9. Rian Mitchell discovers a forgotten mine in the Colombian highlands and then fends off bandits and a jaguar. While recuperating at a nearby coffee plantation, he falls for his caretaker, the plantation's owner Catherine Knowland. However, Mitchell's greed leads him to reopen the mine at any cost, including the life of Catherine's brother. His determination threatens to destroy Catherine's plantation, his friendship with his partner Vic Leonard, and his relationship with Catherine. The photo coupled with this question shows the particular gem found in the mine and gives somewhat of a clue to the film's title. What is the name of this film, which stars Stewart Granger and Grace Kelly?

Answer: Green Fire

The year "Green Fire" was released, 1954, was a busy time for Grace Kelly; "Dial 'M' for Murder", "Rear Window", "The Country Girl", and "The Bridges at Toko-Ri", all starring Grace Kelly, were released the very same year. Her role in "The Country Girl" won her both an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress as well.

The film was based on the novel 'Green Fire", written by Major Peter William Rainier, the great-great-grand nephew of Rear Admiral Peter Rainier, after whom Vancouver named Mount Rainier in the state of Washington. However, these Rainiers were, of course, of no relation to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, whom Kelly married.
10. In this 2011 film, a dying alien, who has crashed on Earth, gives to an overly confident test pilot a powerful weapon as well as a battery with which to charge it. This test pilot soon discovers that the weapon allows him power limited only by his imagination and his will. He eventually uses this power to destroy an evil being named Parallax who wishes to control the universe through fear. What is the name of this film as well as the hero who uses a weapon suggested by the shape of the accompanying image?

Answer: Green Lantern

Ryan Reynolds starred as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, who is given a powerful ring that serves as the focal point of his power. Several other acting talents had roles in the film, including Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins. Furthermore, the film made use of the talents of Geoffrey Rush, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Clancy Brown, who provided voices for some of the other characters.

A movie adaptation of the DC comic book series "Green Lantern" had been in the works since 1997. After several negotiations and re-negotiations as well as several rejected stories and scripts, a crew began filming in 2010. The film did well enough at the box office, but critics mostly rejected it. Because of all of the frustration experienced by most everyone involved in the creation of the film, all plans for a sequel to the film were dropped despite an ending that suggested more Green Lantern stories were to come.

Much of the movie was filmed in Louisiana, including the cities of Madisonville and New Orleans. Also of interest is that Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, and Justin Timberlake were among the actors considered to play the lead role of Hal Jordan or Green Lantern.
