Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although they had done it previously, Abbott and Costello performed the first full version of the comedy sketch "Who's on First?" in a film set on a Mississippi riverboat. Which film was it?

Answer: The Naughty Nineties

In the film, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello play the part of entertainers on a riverboat that has been taken over by crooked gamblers and turned into a floating casino. They help the captain, who lost the boat in a rigged card game, to get it back. "The Naughty Nineties" is also noted for incorporating other famous Abbott and Costello routines: "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean", and the "feathers in the cake" routine and "mirror" scene.

2. What movie has the sensational Donald O'Connor doing a slapstick dance routine while singing the song "Make 'Em Laugh"?

Answer: Singin' in the Rain

The movie follows a silent film company making the transition to sound. The complication for the movie company is that, whilst their leading man Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has a 'talkies voice', their leading lady, Lina Lamont, (Jean Hagen) has a voice only fit for silent movies. The plot centres on having Lina's voice dubbed in by Kathy (Debbie Reynolds) who is also Lockwood's romantic interest. However, all is revealed at the end when the curtain is pulled aside, literally, to show that it is Kathy and not Lina who is singing the song. It is a phenomenal musical with one of the most famous dance sequences of all time, featuring Gene Kelly dancing and singing in the rain. Donald had to be hospitalized for exhaustion, after performing this gruelling routine during the taping of "Singin' in the Rain".

3. In "Road to Morocco", Bob Hope and Bing Crosby have a sing-along with an animal. Which animal crooned along with the comedic duo?

Answer: Camel

"Road to Morocco" was made in 1942 and was the third movie in the "Road to..." series which saw the teaming of Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour in madcap adventures. Like many of the "Road to ..." movies, the plot is not overly complex and is set around two guys (Crossby and Hope) who end up as castaways and get sold into slavery to a beautiful princess (Lamour). It was nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Sound Recording, Best Writing and Best Original Screenplay. In 1996 the movie was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".

5. In the classic movie "Blazing Saddles", black Sheriff Bart walks into the saloon and delivers a package to Mongo, one of the Attorney General's henchmen. What does this 'gift' contain?

Answer: Candy

With his new railroad running into quicksand, Attorney General Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman) decides to re-route the line, which means levelling the town of Rock Ridge! Lamarr convinces the governor (Mel Brooks) to appoint a black town sheriff, hoping the townspeople will either pack up and leave or lynch him! His plan to take over the town is thwarted however when Sheriff Bart (Cleavon Little) wins the respect of the townspeople with help from The Waco Kid (Gene Wilder).

In this memorable scene, Bart struts out of the saloon to the looney tunes song 'That's All Folks!', with his fingers in his ears, seconds before the 'candy' explodes in Mongo's face. Hilarious!

9. In one of the most memorable scenes from the 2004 British slapstick horror movie "Shaun of the Dead", what song by Queen was playing in the pub when they beat an old man (zombie) with pool cues?

Answer: Don't Stop Me Now

Initially, Shaun is hungover and does not spot any of the clues that something is wrong (not even the zombies) until, in his garden, he accidentally impales a woman, whom he thinks is drunk, and she gets up with a huge hole in her stomach! Having weighed up the pros and cons for each survival scenario, Shaun (Simon Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) decide that their local pub, 'The Winchester', is the best place to hide. The zombie of an old man infiltrates their hiding place however, and the jukebox randomly starts playing "Don't Stop Me Now". Shaun, having already had to kill his own mother and step-father when they became zombies, has no problem brandishing a pool cue and letting his anger out!

10. The Australian classic comedy "The Dish" was set in Parkes, New South Wales, in July 1969. What was the 'Dish'?

Answer: A Radio Telescope

"The Dish" is a partially fictionalised account of Australia's role in providing live television for the landing on the moon in 1969. Australia is all set to be the main receiving station for the live television broadcast of the first moon landing. However, this nearly doesn't happen due to staff walkouts, high winds threatening to blow "The Dish" over and a major computer meltdown. But in the best tradition of the movies, they manage to get it all together to provide the live broadcast at the last minute. Amongst its cast is that wonderful New Zealand actor, Sam Neill. It features a classic scene where a game of cricket is played on "The Dish. This scene was actually filmed on the radio telescope at Parkes!
