Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The title of this movie has sparked curiosity among viewers and critics everywhere. According to an interview in the "Austin American Statesman", which of the following was NOT one of the reasons director Paul Thomas Anderson decided to use this title?

Answer: He wanted to draw attention to his film by using a thought-provoking title.

Paul Thomas Anderson knew all along that his movie would be called "Magnolia", but the title was not truly verified until the last two weeks of writing. He learned that if you eat the bark from a magnolia tree, it can supposedly help cure cancer (two of the main characters have cancer). Also, by reading some of Charles Fort's work (he wrote about strange, unexplained phenomena), Anderson came across the concept of the Magonia.
2. As the "Austin American Statesman" article states, the frog sequence at the end of the movie was not intended to have any biblical overtones at first. However, there is mention of a plague of frogs in the Bible. What is that section's citation?

Answer: Exodus 8:2

Exodus 8:2 reads, "And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs". (Note: Paul Thomas Anderson originally encountered the idea of frog rain through Charles Fort's "Book of the Damned".)
3. In the prologue sequence in which Sydney Barringer's story is told, what is the Barringers' apartment number?

Answer: 682

This is just one of many 8:2 references throughout the film. For example, when Sydney is about to jump off the building, the ropes to the left of him are coiled in the shapes of an 8 and a 2. The hands of the clock behind Sydney when he is loading his gun point directly to the 8 and the 2.
4. What time is Claudia and Jim's date?

Answer: 10:00 P.M.

Claudia proposes that she and Jim meet at 8:00. Jim cannot leave work until 10:00, so their date must be two hours later (notice the 8:2 allusion here also).
5. "Quiz Kid" Donnie Smith's oversized check was dated the 28th of which month?

Answer: April

This check is a reminder of Donnie's childhood, during which his father forced him to compete on the "What Do Kids Know?" game show and proceeded to take whatever money his son was awarded.
6. Stanley, whose childhood is much like "Quiz Kid" Donnie Smith's once was, can be seen reading books in the library constantly. Which of the following do we never see Stanley reading?

Answer: Book of the Damned

The link between Donnie and Stanley's stories is obvious. At one point, Donnie says "No, it is not dangerous to confuse angels with children." We often see Stanley lined up in front of the wings of the medical symbol on the set's wall during the quiz show, reminding us of Donnie's quote.

There are also several shots of Stanley sitting in the library lined up perfectly in front of a big open book where the pages resemble wings.
7. When Linda goes to the pharmacy for her many medications, what is the name of the pharmacist who harasses her?

Answer: Ed Jr.

Interestingly enough, the actor who plays pharmacist Sir Edward William Godfrey (Pat Healey), who is killed in the prologue's Greenberry Hill sequence, also plays the pharmacist whose nametag reads "Ed Jr." later in the film. Coincidence? I think not!
8. During his "Seduce and Destroy" seminar, Frank TJ Mackey mistakenly instructs the audience to go to page 18 of the blue book, the chapter called "Form a Tragedy", while he is in the midst of a tragedy of his own. He then corrects himself and tells the audience to go to what page in the white book?

Answer: 23

This is yet another reminder of Exodus 8:2. If you look at the numbers 18 and 23 side by side, the two middle numbers are 8 and 2. 1(8 2)3.
9. Jim Kurring pulls "Quiz Kid" Donnie Smith to safety underneath the awning of a gas station during the frog rain. Which gas station is it?

Answer: Mobil

The Mobil Oil company was originally supposed to be named Magnolia Petrolium. Another interesting tidbit is the location of this particular Mobil station. At the intersection where this action takes place, there is a flower market and in some shots you can see a sign that reads, from top to bottom, "Lillies, Roses, Magnolias." The first two flowers are names of female characters in this movie, and the last flower, the magnolia, is said to symbolize Claudia.
10. In Jim's apartment, there is a chess set with one piece missing. Which piece is it?

Answer: Queen

Jim's chess set is missing a queen. This parallels his own personal situation, as is evident throughout the film.
