Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first actor to ever portray a vampire on film?

Answer: Georges Melies

Made in 1896, "The Devil's Castle" was a two-minute silent, black and white, French-made short. Georges Melies wrote, directed, and starred as a vampire named Mephistopheles. His co-star was Jeanne D'Alcy. It may not seem a big deal now, but at the time, it was an amazing feat to transform a bat into a vampire in human form.
2. Who was the screen's first Frankenstein Monster?

Answer: Charles Ogle

In 1910, Charles Ogle, thanks to Thomas Alva Edison, became the screen's first Frankenstein Monster. The movie was made at Edison Studios in Orange, New Jersey. It was loosely based on Mary Shelley's novel and called "Frankenstein". The film was directed by J. Searle Dawley. Augustus Phillips played Victor Frankenstein and Mary Fuller played Elizabeth.
3. Max Shreck portrayed Count Orlock in the 1922 film "Nosferatu"?

Answer: True

Max Shreck portrayed Count Orlock in the 1922 silent film "Nosferatu". The name Orlock was used not to protect him from sunlight, but to protect him from the legalities of using Bram Stoker's Dracula as the Count's name, which was protected still by copyright. The film was directed by F. W. Murnau.
4. Who starred as the vampire in 1927's "London After Midnight"?

Answer: Lon Chaney

Lon Chaney was one of the finest actors of his day. His ability to create characterization, by expression and creating his own makeup, can be seen in such films as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1923) as Quasimodo, and as the Phantom in "Phantom of the Opera" (1925).
5. In the 1935 film "Mark of the Vampire" who portrayed Count Mora?

Answer: Bela Lugosi

Count Mora was played by Bela Lugosi. "Mark of the Vampire" was directed by Todd Browning, and Lionel Barrymore was the vampire hunter, Professor Zelen. Lugosi, of course, is most famous for his portrayal of Count Dracula in 1931's Universal classic "Dracula".
6. Who starred as Count Anthony Alucard in the 1943 film "Son of Dracula"?

Answer: Lon Chaney, Jr.

Lon Chaney, Jr. starred as Count Anthony Alucard (Dracula spelled backwards!) in 1943's "Son of Dracula". Katherine Cornell and Frank Stanley also starred in this vampire thriller. The movie was directed by Robert Siodmak. Lon Chaney, Jr., born Creighton Chaney, was the son of silent film great Lon Chaney.
7. Who played the werewolf who bit Larry Talbot in 1941's "Wolf Man"?

Answer: Bela Lugosi

It was the gypsy fortune teller Bela, played by Bela Lugosi, who bit Larry Talbot. Lon Chaney, Jr. played Larry Talbot. It was Larry's misfortune to be attacked by the werewolf as he tried to save Jenny from Bela, the werewolf. "Even a man who is pure of heart, and says his prayers by night, can become a wolf, when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright." Claude Rains played Larry's father, Lord John Talbot.

This masterpiece was directed by George Waggner and Curt Siodmak (who also wrote the screenplay).
8. Who played Count Dracula in the 1944 film "House of Frankenstein"?

Answer: John Carradine

John Carradine played Count Dracula. Lon Chaney, Jr. played the Wolf Man. Boris Karloff played Dr. Niemann. Glenn Strange played the Frankenstein Monster. Boris Karloff is famous for playing the Frankenstein Monster in the 1931 classic "Frankenstein" and reprised his role in "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935), and in 1939's "Son of Frankenstein."
9. Who stepped in (but was not credited) for Glenn Strange, as the Frankenstein Monster in 1948's "Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein", after Strange was injured?

Answer: Lon Chaney, Jr.

"Abbott And Costello Meets Frankenstein" brought together all the old Universal Monsters in a wonderful film directed by Charles Barton. Once again, Lon Chaney, Jr. played Larry Talbot and the Wolf Man. When Glenn Strange, who played the Frankenstein Monster, hurt his leg, Lon Chaney, Jr. donned the Monster makeup, but he was not listed in the credits as the Monster.

It also starred Bela Lugosi, Jane Randolph, Lenore Aubert, and of course, Abbott and Costello.
10. Who played Igor, the hunchbacked helper, in the 1974 comedy classic "Young Frankenstein"?

Answer: Marty Feldman

In Mel Books's 1974 comedy classic "Young Frankenstein", very, very, very loosely based on the novel by Mary Shelley, Marty Feldman played the lab assistant with the bug eyes and shifting hump. Peter Boyle played the Frankenstein Monster. Gene Wilder played Dr. Frankenstein. Madeline Kahn, Teri Garr, Kenneth Mars, and Cloris Leachman round out this fabulous cast. Arte Johnson played Renfield in 1979's "Love At First Bite" which cast George Hamilton as Count Vladimur Dracula.
