Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who said, "That was good," and to what was he referring?

Answer: Merry, the dragon rocket firework

Merry and Pippin's introduction in the film is quite memorable. The girly shriek you hear as the dragon rocket takes off is Billy Boyd's actual reaction to the firework lifting off during shooting.
2. Finish this line of Elrond's, "The ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli son of Glóin, by any ______ that we here possess."

Answer: craft

Gimli tries to destroy the One Ring with his axe, but merely succeeds in destroying his axe.
3. Here's another line from Elrond: "The ring-bearer is setting out on the quest of Mount Doom, and to you who travel with him no oath nor bond is laid to go further than you _______."

Answer: will

Elrond is making it clear that Frodo alone bears the responsibility of carrying the One Ring to Mordor.
4. Saruman, speaking of Sauron, says, "His gaze pierces cloud, ______, _____, and ______.

Answer: shadow, earth, and flesh

Saruman is speaking with Gandalf in his chambers at Orthanc. Saruman has "turned to the dark side" though Gandalf doesn't know it yet.
5. "All those who follow in my bloodline shall be bound to its fate, for I will risk no hurt to the ring. It is precious to me." While these words are spoken by one character in the film, they are actually the written words of another. Which character wrote these words?

Answer: Isildur

Isildur's writings, which are archived in Minas Tirith, lead Gandalf to the truth about Bilbo's ring. These writings also reveal to Gandalf that he can determine if Bilbo's ring is the One Ring of Sauron by putting it in fire.
6. Legolas: "I have not the heart to tell you. For me the grief is still too near." To whom is he speaking?

Answer: Merry

Upon hearing of the death of Gandalf in Moria, the Lothlórien elves sing a lament to him.
7. Sam Gamgee, rhyme-maker extraordinaire, quickly comes up with a verse to add to the Lament to Gandalf: "The finest rockets ever see, They burst in stars of blue and green, or after thunder, silver showers, Came falling like ______________."

Answer: a rain of flowers

Sam follows his rhyme up with, "Oh, that doesn't do them justice by a mile."
8. Bilbo: "Alas, eleventy-one years is far too short a time to live among such ________ and __________ hobbits."

Answer: excellent, admirable

Next time you watch the film pay close attention to the smoke emanating from Bilbo's birthday cake. At one point there is quite a cloud billowing up, because the large number of candles actually caught the cake on fire.
9. Pippin: "What about elevensies, luncheon, _______ _____, dinner, supper?"

Answer: afternoon tea

Pip is more than a little concerned that Aragorn does not want to stop for Second Breakfast. The only answer he gets to his, "What about second breakfast?" is an apple in the forehead.

Answer: Frodo

Frodo is wondering why Merry and Pippin popped out of the corn field weighed down with cabbages and carrots.
11. Legolas: "He [Gandalf] was taken by both ________ and _______; a balrog of Morgoth, for we went needlessly into the net of Moria."

Galadriel's response to this is: "Needless were none of the deeds of Gandalf in life."
12. Boromir: "Fool! It is not yours save by unhappy ________. It could have been mine. It should be mine. Give it to me!"

Answer: chance

Boromir is convinced that he can use the ring to defend his people from Mordor.
13. Galadriel: "You have your own choice to make, Aragorn. To rise above the height of all your fathers since the days of Elendil, or to fall into darkness with all ___________."

Answer: that is left of your kin

Galadriel knows that Aragorn must reclaim the throne of Gondor.
14. "Just a simple matter of finding our way through Emyn Muil, an impassable labyrinth of razor sharp rocks?" Who says this and to whom?

Answer: Gimli to Aragorn

Gimli questions both Gandalf and Aragorn regarding their choices of roads to Mordor. Unfortunately, his choice of Moria was not much better than anyone else's.
